Nah man, it's so easy and I find it quite accurate.  It works if you use it as a tool for self improvement by way of self awareness.

It can be bad if it's misused (like I was for awhile) but at least it makes me less offended when certain personailites behave in a way I could never before understand.

Well either you don't understand the principle behind it, or your using a bad questionnaire, or answering how you (would like) your personality to be as opposed to how it is, I find it thinking back all the way to me childhood and how I have acted helps. Moreover the MBTI has retest credibility if its done accurately it actually proves it credibility, moreover, even when you associate with different or similar types on the internet its pretty clear how its pretty accurate. For example, the INTJ forum, is different from the INFP and the INTP forum, etc... You can actually see it within the community. As someone who is split down the middle of ISTJ and INTJ I post on the INTJ forum, it's pretty easy for me to "fit" in there.

Here see this thread I made a few weeks back:

Despite pretending to be a science, it has been supported solely by anecdotal evidence and hasn't been subject to double-blind studies. The system arbitrarily chooses four facets of personality with which to categorize each person, and uses oversimplifying and misleading dichotomies in doing so. The descriptions floating around online and elsewhere make some fairly obvious appeals to various cognitive biases; for example, you'll probably notice that the descriptions grossly overglorify each type, spending the majority of the description telling the reader how great they are while ignoring flaws in character (or simply treating it as a "personality trait" instead). Because, hey, nobody wants to disagree with someone who calls them a "Mastermind." Most of the descriptions are also overgeneralized, attempting to fit as many people as possible who score four preferences on a test.

I totally agree with this person.

Well Cheetah that is fair enough... It's not my job to convince you, for me personally some parts have been consistent with my overall personality. If you can accept "psychology" as a scientific field, I think it would be slightly ignorant, to state MBTI has no credibility. Science is what we currently understand to be true (or supporting) of a theory or a fact we currently know of. It's in a constant state of abrogation.

     Reply #11 - December 19, 2008, 03:41 PM

It is, but even in the field of psychology they are supposed to do double blind studies to test theories.  MBTI has never been subjected to it, so I will remain skeptical. parrot

That is not a specifically cited claim.

Its in the first sentence of the post I quoted.  Evidence was given for it in the form of a PDF file that I can't be bothered to download.

However, until I see evidence of a double blind study supporting it, I will remain a skeptic.

No, here are no citations. To the claims of double blind study, you know why I also look into such documents. But on wiki there are no citations in fact it actually says "citation needed" if you have the PDF pass me the link.

Tut, if there are no citations for double blind studies, that pretty much makes my point for me.

Anyway, I'm not saying that MBTI is totally without merit, just that I'll remain skeptical until I see some peer reviewed evidence for it.

There was a test done on several people (cant remember by whom), they were given a sheet of paper with a description of their personalities written on it. They all had to read the paper independently without talking to others about it. When they finished they had to report whether the description matched their personalities. The vast majority said it described them perfectly.

Each paper had the same thing written on it.

I'm always sceptical of personality tests myself. They are fun to read but are far too vague.

What do you mean, your argument was, "it has no double blind studies" which is not the same as "there are no citations for double blind studies" in any case, wiki is only updated if folks actually feel like updating it. There might even actually be double blind studies for it, but just not updated on the wiki article, the only thing we can say for certainty is, we have not come across any citations to double blind studies.

     Reply #18 - December 19, 2008, 04:28 PM

Double blind studies don't get kept secret, Tut.  They get peer reviewed, hence if there were any there would be public discussion of them.  You with the Internet in front of you should easily be able to find evidence for them.

Until I see some, I will stay a skeptic.

That would be no good unless they ensured they used a broad spectrum of people in the test, for instance if you go Uni you will find more of certain types, and less of another since Uni wouldn't appeal to them.

I would like to see the descriptions they used on the test, because MBTI descriptions can be very very indepth, and if I read a type description for say INTJ I would know flat out that wasn't me.

Lol.  I also find some of your views repulsive.  Does that mean I'm the same personality type as Berbs?  Lots of people here find some of your views repulsive - does that mean the forum is full of INFPs or whatever Berbs is?

Or could it possibly mean that some of your views are repulsive? Tongue

MBTI results depend on the answers to its test questions. It's not too hard to get an accurate description from this if you've studied in-depth psychology enough.

True, but then you would have to a pretty manipulative sort of person to want to tweak the results to show you as something you are not.

Much as I would love to be my shadow type (total opposite) and much as I know what answers would achieve that result for me, the end result would be a lie, and I can't stand lying to myself.
