     OP - December 20, 2008, 07:59 PM

No fukn pansies in my garden, mate, but I did get me a special purchase for Christmas. yes
Tis an Osmanthus fragrans it is, wot are the plant me 'andle is in honour of (as well as being an atrocious pun on my sex and nationality). Not easy to find a lot of the time but I happened to drop into an out of the way nursery that is under new management and the bloke there is also a fan of them. He also had a hangover but that has nothing to do with plants. grin12

Anyway I now have one. The plant that is, not the hangover. For those poor, unenlightened sods who have never had the pleasure it is without a doubt one of the World's Greatest Smelly Plants. Doesn't look like much but is most scrumptiously wafty and guaranteed to put a smile on yer dial. So there. bunny

Mmmm, I like it. Seems that Tea olive is a commonly used name. Thrives on neglect, lives a long time, 20 ft tall but can be grown in containers. So , I'll get one and try it out if I can find one over here. It's got 2 chances.
And I know what you mean: I too, come from a land where men are men and pansies are flowers.

Religion is ignorance giftwrapped in lyricism.

Rather slow growing so it'd take a long time to get to 20 feet. The advantage of the slow growth is that if you don't want the damned thing 20 feet tall it's easy to keep under control. As for "thrives on neglect" I expect that will depend on your local climate and the exact spot you decide to plant it in. They're not keen on totally dry soil but even over here they aren't outrageously thirsty. Being slow growers means you don't have to constantly feed them either.

Now you just need to grow your own vegetables.

Tastes 1000% better than the crap you get at grocery stores. Yum Yum

Tell me about it. Had tomatoes, eggplant and pumpkins last year but I haven't got around to planting any veg this year yet. Got a few herbs, of course. The mandarins are good too.

Meh. Too small. Anyway the best bit is the cane toads. They make great compost. The only good cane toad is a dead one.

but I LIKE the fact that it?s so small! Makes everybody know everybody else, and getting around easy! (unfortunately, it also makes YOU more quickly acquire a reputation yourself and that?s not ALWAYS a good thing, if you let yourself go too much, lol)
Cane toads?? They among the toxic fauna? (what isn?t, in Oz?  parrot )

Yup cane toads are toxic. Bastards of things. They were introduced to control a pest of sugar cane and rapidly turned into a far worse pest themselves. Can't eat them but you can compost them.

And they breed like cockroaches, plus nothing in Australia eats 'em.

Just made some potato soup from some stuff we grew this year. A bunch of the potatoes were as big as softballs.

Haven't tried spuds yet but pumpkins rock. Two other things I'm going to try are globe artichokes and asparagus. Both are apparently very tolerant and produce food for several years. That's my kind of plant. Afro

Oh yeah, some native animals are starting to eat the toads. It's only certain parts of them that are toxic. Crocs have even been seen washing the toads, as the poison glands empty when the toads are attacked. There is also at least one native frog that eats cane toad tadpoles even though they are toxic to many other species, so with a bit of luck we'll be able to knock the bugger back a bit.
