  • Superman's critique on the human race?
     OP - December 28, 2008, 11:50 AM

I was watching kill bill last night (because I've always fallen asleep at the very end), and when Bill and Black mamba were having their last chat, he said:

    Quote
As you know, l'm quite keen on comic books. Especially the ones about superheroes. I find the whole mythology surrounding superheroes fascinating. Take my favorite superhero, Superman. Not a great comic book. Not particularly well-drawn. But the mythology... The mythology is not only great, it's unique. Now, a staple of the superhero mythology is, there's the superhero and there's the alter ego. Batman is actually Bruce Wayne, Spider-Man is actually Peter Parker. When that character wakes up in the morning, he's Peter Parker. He has to put on a costume to become Spider-Man. And it is in that characteristic Superman stands alone. Superman didn't become Superman. Superman was born Superman. When Superman wakes up in the morning, he's Superman. His alter ego is Clark Kent. His outfit with the big red "S", that's the blanket he was wrapped in as a baby when the Kents found him. Those are his clothes. What Kent wears - the glasses, the business suit - that's the costume. That's the costume Superman wears to blend in with us. Clark Kent is how Superman views us. And what are the characteristics of Clark Kent. He's weak... he's unsure of himself... he's a coward. Clark Kent is Superman's critique on the whole human race. Sorta like Beatrix Kiddo and Mrs. Tommy Plimpton.

And the part in bold sort of struck me as being wrong.

I mean the whole point of Clark kent is less about fitting in, than it is about being so non descript that no one ever really remembers him, so that they can't make the connection from Kent to superman.

I don't see it as his critique on the human race, just his critique on what it takes to hide out in the human race.

    What do you think?  wacko

(random topic of the day No1 lol)

Inhale the good shit, exhale the bullshit.

That angle was a bit overt in the preview for the last movie...

Lots of things seem to be a modern Christ story.  Narnia and the Terminator movies spring to mind.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe - Aslan is Jesus in lion form.  Cheesy

The first Terminator movie is pretty overtly Christian, an unmarried girl pregnant with the saviour of the human race.

Superman was inspired by Nietzche's Ubermensch, and that we suppress our greatness order to participate in society with its slave morality. Superman is anti-Christian.

But it shows how people can twist anything to support their religious views...

superman was created by some jewish kids. i don't think ubermensch is about suppressing greatness, it's about becoming better than human...

or, arguably, unleashing suppressed greatness, heroic self-realisation etc.

Superman was inspired by Nietzche's Ubermensch, and that we suppress our greatness order to participate in society with its slave morality. Superman is anti-Christian.

That is possibly the original intention behind creating superman. The way superman morphed into our present culture, has very little to do with the original intention behind the creation of superman.

He was originally a villainisation of Ubermensch (a concept borgeois society found offensive, even as it mirrored them, in a way), it should be said.
