  • Interested to see the geographical concentration and spread of members
     OP - January 01, 2009, 01:54 PM

I am from the UK - What country are you based in?

I was wondering whether our movement was predominantly one from the Western world, or whether those in Islamic countries were also beginning to break free from the religion.

For those interested in the results, I will compile a table here when it looks like most of the results are through.

    UK ex muslim

And some of our members haven't been around recently so I will say:

Witzbold was an ex muslim based in Pakistan

Afghan ex muslim was based in afghanistan

    Maghrebi was based in Morocco

Emerald is based in a muslim country too.

I'm sure there are more but I can't remember them off the top of my head.

I would say definately it's more western dominated, but there are members who live in muslim countries and still managed to see the light.  dance

    U.S. - Never been a Muslim.

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I remain.

What do people mean when they say "never been a muslim"?  Huh?

Do you mean that you've grown up in a muslim family but never believed in the faith or you're not an ex-Muslim. If it's the latter then why are you joining this forum?

oh Muslim, oh servant of Allah, this is a Jew behind me, come and kill him!"

Because it's a free forum as long as you stick within the rules, and because diverse views are welcome, and because if it was an ex muslim ONLY forum, it would practically dead since we aren't exactly the most numerous group out there.

Why, do you have a problem with this?

When I post a comment or express an opinion I do so as someone who has been on the inside.

It's interesting to see that someone aren't talking from my perspective. When you are on the outside looking in you have a completely different view from someone on the inside looking out.

But then again the inside is very different for all of us, some of us have extreme experiences to relay, and even those on the inside can not relate to them, and I as someone who felt the sting of the extreme experiences can not really relate to those who had it easier on the inside.

The box looks different to us all, and none of the never been muslims try to pretend they know what the box looks like on the inside, they are simply saying what the box looks like from the outside.

The only people not welcome here are the ones who can't even see the box for what it is, and try to make it seem like something else, ie bigots and haters.

Good point Berbs, also the kind of issues ex-muslims face are similar to people of any religion who have been drip (or force) fed religion from an early age by their parents, in particular the feelings of betrayal & alienation  they feel towards their own family and peer group.

In fact I am not sure if their is anything unique or different about being an ex-muslim, compared to an ex from any other religion, other than the fact that (in most cases) we are under more pressure to conform.

Exactly, for instance Sanitarium, a never been muslim member, has been cut off from all of her family except her sister, for leaving Christianity behind.

I think we can all empathise when we are related to people who are religious, regardless (as you said) of what religion it was.

Most topics are Muslim related/Muslim hating. Very little mutual support going on here so I don?t really agree with your comments .

Now I know there are non-exmuslims making these comment I feel differently about what I've read.

I dont really agree - we try and discourage hate and indiscriminate negative generalisations about all muslims (such as 'its a mistake to marry a muslim man  Wink')   Also I for one do find support here when I come across apostasy related issues in my own life - I tend to hash it out in the real world rather than online but I know if I needed to talk about it I could do so here.

Animation_guy, it says on the front page that membership of the forum is open to anyone. It's a public forum. Basically I suppose that most people who have never been Muslims would join because they are interested in Islam in some way or because they wish to support the right of apostates to think for themselves without incurring penalties. At least I would hope those are the reasons. Obviously in some cases there will be different agendas.

As this is a public forum there will be a range of opinions. Not even all ex-Muslims have the same opinions on the same topics. If you think there's too much hatred in someone's post feel free to rip them a new one. Just try to do it without starting a flame war as that tends to make a mess of things. As staff we don't want this place turning into another snakepit as the internet already has plenty of those.

Anyway with regard to the OP I'm in Australia. I've also never been Muslim, as most people here know. If anyone is wondering why I'm here it's because I already knew Berbs from elsewhere and offered to give her a hand getting this place off the ground since I thought it was a worthwhile project.

I for one love this forum, I enjoy the mix of members on here, and I get plenty of support for my issues.

It's fair enough what he's saying about getting a different perspective on someone's posts after learning more about them. Can't really complain about that. We did discuss having badges or whatever for ex-Muslim members but for some reason we decided not to. Can't remember all the details but it was polled among the members and staff.

    Hi AG,

I'd be interested to know what sort of support, mutual or otherwise, and apart from the act of talking things through that you'd like to see on the forum.

It's obvious you are neither looking for nor need support but perhaps you may have some fresh ideas for applications of this forum that others may find useful.

You are right, I don't need support. I do have some "fresh ideas" but I have hi-jacked this tread enough so I think I'll let people get back to the topic.

Results so far amonst ex-muslims who replied:

    uk      3
    ireland      1
    turkey      1
    usa      1
    australia                       1

Sadly it does look like users of this forum predominate from the West.  I was hoping our ideology was spreading at a faster rate in muslim nations, where the majority of muslims live.  This could be because they have their own alternative versions of this forum in their respective countries, or they would not wish to declare their apostacism on a public (yet secret) forum.

However from small acorns, great Oaks do grow.

If the Australian is osmanthus and the Irish person is SnowFlake then I have to point out that they aren't ex-muslims.

    osmanthus:
I'm in Australia. I've also never been Muslim

    SnowFlake:
    Ireland.  Never been a muslim.
