  • Does atheism equal socialism?
     OP - January 01, 2009, 11:21 PM

Atheist seem to have a lot of left wing views. I have to keep my Daily Mail reading and semi fascist views a secret around these people.

    Are you a left winger?

You don't have to keep anything a secret. It's entirely up to you. If you want your question answered you'll need to define "left winger". We had a member here who defined John Kerry (the one who was running for POTUS a while back) as a radical leftist. Really. He was serious.  whistling2

To be athiestic and come from an islamic background ,you often have to challenge stereotypical prejudices in the religion. If you hate jews, gays and want to keep women down you may aswell stay muslim as the religion will reinforce your principles. Those of us who have left islam do so because we dislike these bigoted aspects, and that tends to make us more left-leaning.

    That's my 2 pence.

We are in favor of tolerance, but it is a very difficult thing to tolerate the intolerant and impossible to tolerate the intolerable.

No atheism does not necessarily equal socialism, I am both an atheist and radically right-wing (in the correct sense, not the smearing of collectivist ideologies as extreme right, when they are in fact closer to the left, such as Fascism, Nazism and the BNP.)  However you will find that the majority of Atheist groups and organisations do tend to be very left-leaning.

    Hi Gonzo,

Nice to see you back, I think my own political stance is somewhat right-wing, too. I have a strong distaste for socialism/communism (the democratic socialism of Sweden being an exception) and I think classical liberalism is closest to reflecting my political views. Small state, anti-aristocracy, rule of law, spontaneous order, etc. I also find the prevalence of nihilistic or semi-nihilistic ideas among some Western Leftists distasteful, i.e. the Far Left. But I have sympathy for GLBT, feminist and anti-theist concerns, so I really don't know where I stand on the political spectrum.

    Hi Zaephon,

I'm also what is considered a classical liberal, or good old fashioned Capitalist.  With regard to GLBT the rights of women, the crux of right wing ideology is equality under the law, which guarantees and protects the rights of all individuals, not merely those of a particular group.  The situation in America, is that the "right-wing" is composed of a mixture of groups and inconsistent ideologies, where those who claim to endorse and support freedom, at least economically, still wish to restrict the freedom of those whose lifestyles they do not agree with.  On the reverse side of the spectrum many of left, including pressure groups representing (or claiming to represent) Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered individuals or women have gone beyond legitimately campaigning for equality under the law and are now seeking privileges based on their sexuality or gender (the same is also true of some groups representing racial and religious interests, among many others) which is the point where I start to disagree with them.

    Regards,
    Gonzo
