     OP - February 08, 2009, 11:11 PM

Sorry for my absence guys - I needed a break for a bit, and its been SO HOT for about 2 weeks I haven't been arsed to bother turning my computer on most days. 38 - 46 degrees celsius.

On Saturday (46 degrees and hot winds), fires broke out all over my state (Victoria) and there were 2 major fires in/around my town. I was all ready to evacuate! Fortunately I didn't have to, but at least 57 houses have been burnt down in my town. State wide, 108 people are confirmed dead so far. Most of the fires are suspected arson (bastards!).

I've been reading about this online today. What sort of monster does this? The heck of it is, the firefighters said they put out fires only to have people run right back out and reignite them  finmad

They better hope the police get ahold of them before the general public does. I would think people want to beat these sickos within an inch of their worthless lives.

Arson?  Huh?  Jeez, there are some evil bastards out there!

Hope you get through it ok, Sani.

Thanks! Yeah I know - I hope they catch each and every one of them and throw the book at them. This is the worst bushfire incident in the history of Victoria - the previous yard stick for fire severity was Ash Wednesday but this is far worse.

The houses, property, people, animals, wildlife losses are tremendous. Whole towns have been wiped out. Furthermore Australia is in a drought atm, so we really can't spare the water to put these things out - those arsonists should be truly ashamed of themselves.

@Cheetah: thank you! The fire almost got to the centre of my town. It started on the opposite side (so I had the middle of town between the fire and me). Fortunately the firefighters got it contained because it would not have taken long to get to me! My house and pets are fine thankfully.

People in other parts of Victoria were trying to outrun the fire in their cars but they didn't make it. The winds were so strong, some people only got a minute or two warning - they had to leave their pets behind so they lost their houses and their pets.

This is so horrible :( The police are saying the arsonists may be charged with manslaughter or murder. I say hear hear!

They definitely should be charged with murder.  What kind of a psychopath would do such a sick thing. finmad

They're arsonists? I don't really understand WHY they're doing it either, but I guess that just means we are not arsonists.

2 people died in my town - the first guy was a disabled guy in a wheelchair...he couldn't get out in time. Still 108 confirmed dead, but police still can't get into most areas to search for bodies....so it is most likely to go a lot higher.

ETA: Prime minister Kevin Rudd calls the arsonists Mass Murderers. I don't think those caught are going to get off lightly (and rightly so)

Current death toll: 166 confirmed deaths.

Someone on another forum alerted me to this. They haven't caught the arsonists yet, so it is just a possible motive at this time:

    Quote
Islam group urges forest fire jihad

AUSTRALIA has been singled out as a target for "forest jihad" by a group of Islamic extremists urging Muslims to deliberately light bushfires as a weapon of terror.

US intelligence channels earlier this year identified a website calling on Muslims in Australia, the US, Europe and Russia to "start forest fires", claiming "scholars have justified chopping down and burning the infidels' forests when they do the same to our lands".

The website, posted by a group called the Al-Ikhlas Islamic Network, argues in Arabic that lighting fires is an effective form of terrorism justified in Islamic law under the "eye for an eye" doctrine.

The posting ? which instructs jihadis to remember "forest jihad" in summer months ? says fires cause economic damage and pollution, tie up security agencies and can take months to extinguish so that "this terror will haunt them for an extended period of time".

"Imagine if, after all the losses caused by such an event, a jihadist organisation were to claim responsibility for the forest fires," the website says. "You can hardly begin to imagine the level of fear that would take hold of people in the United States, in Europe, in Russia and in Australia."

It was 76 last time I checked and I thought that was fucking bad. Oh shit.

    Oh, and welcome back.  Afro

Thanks AJ and Singh! Unfortunately Sky news has just reported the confirmed death toll is now 173. Conservative estimates say it could go as high as 200-230 with 1,000 homes lost.

No way. Surely they could do something before that happens?

And is this in one geographical location or is it spread out?

Its all over the state Singh. The hot weather and the winds mean that the firefighters have to chase it around. Once it clears through one town it goes on to the next one. The winds also carry embers many kilometres so residents have no warning before their house/property is alight. Many people describe the embers as "fireballs in the sky".

What they mean when they say "confirmed death toll" is that the police and forensics guys have to actually get to all of these places and find the bodies/jewlery (so hot some bodies were cremated) and confirm the numbers themselves. These people died when the fires hit on Saturday and Sunday, so the deaths have already happened - there is nothing to 'prevent' they just have to be able to get into these places (extreme heat and obstructions) and tally the numbers.

Of course the fires have moved on and other towns/properties are being destroyed so everyone is spread really thin.

Meanwhile Western Australia (another state) has been put on high fire alert so hopefully the same thing doesn't happen there!

omg. I didnt know it was that bad. It's really really sad. How can people do that? Fucking disgusting.

It sounds so harsh as well. Can't imagine what a fireball in the sky would look like.

This news has ruined my day. At first it was hard for me to imagine what it would be like for them but now it sounds 100 times worse than I imagined it to be.

There's no evidence of anything like that involved, and Australia does have a tendency towards forest fires at this time of the year.  The arson attacks, as far as I can tell, are people going back to the sites of fires which started naturally and reigniting them.  It sounds more like general psychopathy to me, than any concerted terrorist attack.

You can look here for the current fires burning in my state:
    http://mapvisage.appspot.com/fires/FireMap.html

of course that doesn't show ALL of them...only the ones that are currently burning.

Don't worry Singh, Aussies are resilient...many charities have had to ask people to STOP donating stuff...all over Australia people are donating anything and everything to help out. It helps to know that people are thinking of us (Aussies) even if you're all too far away to do anything.

Yep tell me about it. Aussies all over the country are LIVID at these arsonists. It would be much better if the police got to them before any of the public.

I agree absolutely. However I thought I'd bring it up anyway even though just thinking about it the past few minute I doubt the article I posted is related.

I agree. However one around my town was started by a cigarette butt (witnesses saw it), although I agree some were naturally started, some were arson. Thanks for your thoughts Cheetah Smiley

Holy crap, what kind of an idiot throws a cigarette butt on the ground in tinderbox dry conditions in the middle of forest fire season!?

Anyway, glad you're safe.  I wonder if Os' area is affected?  He hasn't been online much the last couple of days, I hope he hasn't had to evacuate his house suddenly.   Huh?

    Welcome back Sani,

As far as the forest jihad, it is a theory that islamists only have themselves to blame since they already talked about it and recommended it to their followers.

Even if it is proven beyond doubt that this is not a forest jihad, penalties have to be implemented on the groups that recommended forest jihad, for all the confusion and negative feelings and mistrust that the hateful and murderous instructions have generated in afflicted societies.

Great to see you back Sani and plz do me a big favor and wear some nice fire-resistant jewelery.
