If you're referring to the "most online" stat we had a surge of spiders indexing the site. It'll probably happen again at some point. No big deal.

I highly doubt that, I used to have a vb forum back in the days, this is an attack to put your servers down.

Google/yahoo/msn bot spiders do not attack in their hundreds, its a good thing that you have a good server or it would have collapsed, if you can monitor the online members you can see that most of them share a similar ip, just the last digit or so changes and their activity is similar to the same minute.

Our server is nowhere near full capacity so would need a fair hit to take it out. I must admit I didn't notice the 763 figure until the day after and by then it was too late to use the forum software to track the IP's. I could have dug through the raw access log in cpanel but since everything was fine I didn't bother. I assumed they were spiders though since if anyone really wanted to do a DoS they would surely have more connections lined up for an attack. 700 isn't that many. It may have been an incompetent attempt at a DoS though.

Back when I used to be a young religious extremist I joined an Arab hacking forum and we were asked to download programs to rush the servers of anti-muslim and danish websites ^^

we will be like 20 guys attacking a server at the same time, it has worked sometimes but that was very rare, I have never succeed anyway

Servers these days are built to handle a pretty good amount of traffic and memory, its only those that are self hosted at a friends old computer that can collapse from such failed attacks
