    We've been watching an interesting UK TV show concerning "Britishness" here in Australia.

    DNA is a wonderful chemical base to work from and it would appear that all these so called 'British' citizens 'aint Brit at all.

    As is the rest of the world, they 'aint what they appear to be.

    Undergoing a DNA examination and also a Genealogical examination shows us that all the so called 'blue bloods' are mongrels.

    And the people listed below them are even worse.

    Such is life.

    There are so many things to respond to in life and it does'nt depend upon where your roots are.

    For all our critisism and sarcasim we have to bite the bullet and remember that kindness and compassion are the most important elements, irrespective of what we say here.

    Anyone who lives in Britain and knows a thing or two about British history knows that the Brits haven't always been British. What with influx by the Romans, the Saxons, the Vikings, etc. etc. And Scottish people are actually Irish in origin unless they have true Pict blood running through them.

    I am a pure bred Norman! with a touch of Saxon, and of course some Irish and Scottish and of course the Romans came to England and sewed their seeds for a while so I'm sure I got some of that too. In fact the Brits are pretty much the product of hundreds of years of barbarian rapes.

    No wonder we're such pricks

    I think you probably need to read up some 'British' history. Most of what you've said is just plain wrong. Some of us can even spell sow.

    Anyway, off the top of my head, a recent study demonstrates that almost 80% of male genetic markers here in the UK are Celtic, less than 20% Anglo-Saxon and only c. 8% Roman. Google it for yourself, I can't be arsed at the moment.

    Poor old Chas, don't you know that hybrid vigour is what made the British so formidable, both genetically and culturally. And the process continues today.

    The darned place was covered in a mile of ice until c. 12000-11000 years ago and then it was first come - first served with a bit of argy-bargy ever since.

    Yes. I understand the contrast in the equation, but the conclusions are similar. The Nazis claimed that genetic purity made the Germans formidable. Sojo is now saying genetic diversity makes the British formidable.

    Formidable compared to who?

    Does this mean that the US has greater cultural and genetic strength than Britain?

    They also claimed that racial mixing was responsible for German weaknesses, so  I could claim that your idea of Britain as a "nation of dicks" because of generations of pollution by nasty foreign rapists is "similar" to the Nazis.  We can all take things out of context and label somebody we don't agree with as being "like Hitler and the Nazis."  That's where Godwin's Law comes from.

    I don't entertain for a second the notion that either you or Sojournerlumus have Nazi like delusions of British racial superiority.  You just have a difference of opinion - he sees the ethnic diversity which stemmed from generations of invaders and immigrants as a strength, you see it as an explanation of Britain's faults.  That doesn't make either of you "similar to the Nazis."

    I don't know about greater than Britain, nor genetic strenths,  but the US certainly has its ethnic diversity to thank for a lot of its cultural strengths.

    My tongue was firmly planted in my cheek when I wrote that the British were pricks, I am one myself (British, not Prick). I think it is fine to be proud of where you came from, but important to recognize that we are all descended from a mixture of villains and heroes. I don?t think Sojournerlumus has Nazi-like delusions. I think it was the ?genetically formidable? part that seemed to be edging a little too close to a similar line of thought. I think ?formidable? implies in opposition to something and lies somewhere between ?strong? and ?superior?.  We commonly accept that a lack of genetic diversity (inbreeds) can cause defects so therefore a degree of diversity is beneficial. But can we then say that a people like the Brazilians are genetically stronger than the Chinese because of their diverse ethnic ancestry?  They do grow the best super-models.
    Cultural strength (I?m not even sure what that means) is a different issue. I agree that a culture that is unafraid to absorb outside influence becomes better for it.  I?m not sure I would say that a pliable culture is stronger than a rigid one. How does one judge the strength of a culture anyway?
