  • Was Prophet Muhammad a gold digger?
     OP - March 02, 2009, 10:41 AM

Here's an article about old U.S. Billionaires & their young wives. These men live in U.S.A. Was Muhammad a medieval Saudi gold digger? Was he really attracted to Khadija, & Khadija to him, or was he in the marriage for the money? He was monogamous with Khadija as long as she lived.

Was Muhammad a medieval desert trophy husband to a successful ageing desert multi millionairess(in Medieval Saudi currency?) What do you think?

It wouldn't surprise me - his self-serving behaviour knew no bounds.

BMZ complains that Jesus did nothing new, well Muhammad was more in the mould of the OT Prophets' yet he did do a new thing- he found a woman like Khadija to marry.

I don't think any OT Prophet- Abraham, Moses, Jacob etc became trophy husbands to successful businesswomen! That certainly was a novel & interesting twist to this whole Prophet thing- & certainly not a perverted or genocidal thing to do.
Mo & Khadija, your story rocks! Its a novelty in the tales of Prophethood, past & present.

But li, it was far better than the stuff Muhammad later did, don't you think so? By his standards it was a very good thing, it certainly didn't hurt anyone! Insert evil laugh

He married khadija for her wealth, of course he was a gold digger, he loved booty, god even said he deserved it.

He couldn't remarry whilst Khadija was alive because she would never have accepted it.

Inhale the good shit, exhale the bullshit.

He tortured Safiyya's husband for treasure, that alone says enough.

Tortured - what did he do to him?

Tortured - what did he do to him?

From Wikipedia, a somewhat neutral source:
Ibn Hisham writes about Kinana ibn al-Rabi

Kinana al-Rabi, who had the custody of the treasure of Banu Nadir, was brought to the apostle who asked him about it. He denied that he knew where it was. A Jew came (Tabari says "was brought"), to the apostle and said that he had seen Kinana going round a certain ruin every morning early. When the apostle said to Kinana, "Do you know that if we find you have it I shall kill you?" He said "Yes". The apostle gave orders that the ruin was to be excavated and some of the treasure was found. When he asked him about the rest he refused to produce it, so the apostle gave orders to al-Zubayr Al-Awwam, "Torture him until you extract what he has." So he kindled a fire with flint and steel on his chest until he was nearly dead. Then the apostle delivered him to Muhammad b. Maslama and he struck off his head, in revenge for his brother Mahmud

Al-Mubarakpuri maintains that al-Rabi was bound by agreements between Muhammad and Khaybar to not conceal anything from the Muslims. He was exceuted, al-Mubarakpuri concludes, for breaching the agreement. Montgomery Watt supports the view that he was executed for concealing the treasure. Shibli Nomani, however, argues that Kinana was put to death because he had killed Mahmud, the brother of Muhammad b. Maslama. Nomani also casts doubt on the accuraccy of the story due to its sources (see section below).[5]

     Authenticity
The story of al-Rabi narrated by Ibn Hisham has been taken from Ibn Ishaq. Ibn Ishaq, however, doesn't specify any source for this story. According to Nomani, tradionists have stated that Ibn Ishaq probably borrowed this story from the contemporary descendents of al-Rabi's tribe.

Nomani also casts doubt on the story on the basis of its inconsistency with Muhammad's other actions. He doubts Muhammad would have tortured al-Rabi, as he forgave the Jewess Rayhana bint Amr ibn Khunafa after the she tried to poison him.

Rashna's comments: Rayhana was a Jewish woman who he raped, er married so she naturally wanted revenge. So much sordid stuff in this guy's life. Sheet! vomit

An article from Wikipedia about Rayhana:

    Rayhana

Rayhana bint Amr ibn Khunafa (Arabic: ريحانة بنت زيد بن عمرو‎) was a Jewish woman from the Banu Qurayza tribe. Her relationship with Muhammad is disputed.

Rayhana was originally a member of the Banu Nadir tribe who married a man from the Banu Qurayza.

According to Ibn Ishaq, Muhammad took her as as a maiden and offered her to become his wife if she accepted Islam, but she refused. According to Marco Sch?ller, Rayhana either became the Prophet's concubine or, was married to him and later divorced.

Ibn Sa'd writes and quotes Waqidi that Rayhana herself has said that she was manumitted and married by Muhammad. According to Al-Halabi, Muhammad married and appointed dowry for her. It is further narrated that, upon marriage, she refused to take the hijab, causing a rift between her and Muhammad. The couple later reconciled. She died shortly after Muhammad's hajj and was buried in Jannat al-Baqi cemetery. Ibn Hajar quotes a description of house Muhammad allotted to Rayhana after their marriage from Muhammad Ibn al-Hassam's History of Medina.

In another version, Hafiz Ibn Minda writes that Muhammad set Rayhana free, and she went back to live with her own people. This version is also supported as the most likely by modern day scholar, Shibli Nomani.
Not much is known about Rayhana; she died a year before Muhammad.

So Nomani feels Muhammad forgave Rayhana for attempting to murder him & finally set her free & so was a kind man?I wonder, was this because Muhammad was truly kind or this Rayhana was unusually rebellious & spirited? These captured women, both in OT & Quran seem unusually weak & resigned to their sorry fate- Rayhana was a truly a woman of substance in the ancient world! Trying to murder her captor? Maybe Muhammad thought she'd make another attempt to  Headsman him, so its best to let her runalong

    Anyway, well done Rayhana!!!

That is always something I have found to be very strange.

Do you (or anyone else) know of any other stories/hadiths of rebellion from slaves or oppressed women?

I know this story from a chick lit! There's this woman who's the heroine's ancestress, who's forced to marry the warlord Alboin who'd sacked her country & forcefully married her,who forces her on her wedding night to drink blood from her dead dad's skull-so she strangles him with her braid, & she's rewarded for her bravery by the King, who gives her a small principilaty to rule over. queen_not_drag Muhammad acts like the villain in kids' story books rather than a Prophet, doesn't he?
I'm afraid I dunno any other such women in the stories I've read.
