    @ abdalwali,

actually it's been mentioned in several books that Jubair divorced Aisha, (ie they were married).

What books? Is it mentioned in any hadiths?

Thanks Peruvian, I knew there were other examples but they didn't come to mind. And thanks Emerald for the sources.

Aksel, I don't know about 'positive preference' - is it a term from psychology? I can't be sure that Muhammad was not a paedo - it's possible. However I imagine paedophilia to be like a fetish without which you can't get off. I could be wrong, and he did seem to want to fuck a lot - and mainly they were adult women, albeit young women.

Jabir bin 'Abdullah recounts this story.

'Abdullah died and he left (behind him) nine or seven daughters. I married a woman who had been previously married. Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said to me: Jabir, have you married? I said: Yes. He (again) said: A virgin or one previously married? I said: Messenger of Allah, with one who was previously married, whereupon he said: Why didn't you marry a young girl so that you could sport with her and she could sport with you, or you could amuse with her and she could amuse with you? I said to him: 'Abdullah died (he fell as martyr in Uhud) and left nine or seven daughters behind him; I, therefore, did not approve of the idea that I should bring a (girl) like them, but I preferred to bring a woman who should look after them and teach them good manners, whereupon he (Allah's Messenger) said: May Allah bless you, or he supplicated (for the) good (to be) conferred on me (by Allah). (Muslim)

Of the two's morals who could not say that Jabir's was the better?

Rashna, I am a father to a young daughter and she is the main reason (selfishly I admit) for my apotasy. I am not raising her in this religion. However, freedom of speech is a principle I have long held and, at least for now, I am sticking to this principle. I can understand your side of the story though.

Christ. That's a long story. And one for another time I think. Suffice to say, while I like a lot of things about Islam and those who came after, I have not been a Muslim since September 2008.

Edit: Also I haven't practiced any Islamic rituals since May, 2005.

Oh, conjuring the "our glorious forefathers" argument...  Roll Eyes

Our glorious grandfathers did many sick things. Human history has borne witness to great monstrosities, ranging from genocide to pedophilia. Just because earlier generations never questioned such deviant practices doesn't mean that we should try to "understand things in their context." A child victim of pedophilia was no different from the child victims of pedophilia today, they still had to endure the same psychological distress and great suffering. If we cannot dare to repudiate their actions, we can never progress.

Can we say that ancient Egyptian royalty did not commit incest because it was acceptable by their standards? This is nothing but obscurantism and double-think.

    Also, proof is required that:

    1. Pedophilia was acceptable and widespread in Mo's society, which nobody volunteered to offer in this thread.
    2. Just exactly how Mohammad can avoid the label "pedophile" while Aisha was reportedly his favourite wife. An ordinary womaniser doesn't rape children.

Mohammad may have been just another pedophile in human history, just as the Aztec priesthood indulged in human sacrifice casually, and just as the ancient Egyptian royalty engaged in incest without questioning it. This doesn't mean we cannot define his despicable behaviour in modern terminology. The word "genocide" was coined in the last century, but it describes many different chapters of ethnic cleansing in human history very clearly. To argue the opposite is obscurantism.

According to this Mayo Clinic study of child sex offenders, 93% were attracted to adults also (page 3, "Categories of Pedophiles").

Paedophiles exclusively attracted to kids seem the exception rather than the rule.

I think this forum depressed me somewhat from my more happy-go-lucky state when I joined, but still, there are important and serious topics that need to be discussed.      thnkyu Emerald!

I'll google  Aristotle, Darwin & Neitzche  & their sexist opinions!
You're right, human desire for power & control over other creatures, races, faiths & genders is the root of sexism or other isms, but its still particularly despicable to invent a One True God & have Him speak in your sexist voice.

Wou wou wou! Im sure there are sexist Atheists out there. And im sure there are many sexist Men of different religions out there. But it dousnt matter if a man is religious or not, if he has complexes or insecurities about women, or is raised in a household where he learns sexist behavior, he will have to fight this his whole life. Just like somehow religion allways seems to claw itself into peoples minds who were brought up in a Religious familie.

But you have to remember that the past 2000 Years were dictated by patriarchic societies. You cant get rid of these in 50 Years. The feminist Movement did a great job so far, but its still a long way to go until both Genders are equel.

But on the other Hand, many pre Abrahamic Religions were Matriarchal, and the Women were the leaders. In a cultural enviroment were the Men often went away for several days for Hunting its not surpising that the Women took on the leader role. And we see some great Ape species who also live in matriarchal structures. Its not like Male dominance is natural.

I think, as an Atheist raised by a feminist mother, that we need the time to get rid of 3000 Year old habits. We cant get rid of them in the next few month. Especialy when insecure Men try to hide behinde sexism to cover up their incompetence and fears.

As a man you only get stronger if you accept the fact that Females are equal, in some areas are even better then men. It raises the bar to achieve more.

His marriage to Aisha was always a sticking point with me...besides her young age there is the question of consent. The potential bride must give consent for a marriage to be considered halal...she cannot be forced to marry (all though that is a common practice as well in the Muslim world) Obviously Aisha was too young to give her consent to being married off...to the Prophet no less...the standard for which other Muslims should strive...so how was that considered and Islamically correct marriage just from the consent of the potential brides perspective?

    Something Ive always wondered.  Huh?

Wow. Forgot about this. It's an even worse aspect to the entire affair.

    Narrated Aisha
The Prophet engaged me when I was a girl of six (years). We went to Medina and stayed at the home of Bani-al-Harith bin Khazraj. Then I got ill and my hair fell down. Later on my hair grew (again) and my mother, Um Ruman, came to me while I was playing in a swing with some of my girl friends. She called me, and I went to her, not knowing what she wanted to do to me. She caught me by the hand and made me stand at the door of the house. I was breathless then, and when my breathing became Allright, she took some water and rubbed my face and head with it. Then she took me into the house. There in the house I saw some Ansari women who said, "Best wishes and Allah's Blessing and a good luck." Then she entrusted me to them and they prepared me (for the marriage). Unexpectedly Allah's Apostle came to me in the forenoon and my mother handed me over to him, and at that time I was a girl of nine years of age. (Bukhari)

Also here are some Orthodox perspectives from Abd ar-Rahman Robert Squires who quips "If it was good enough for Abraham(P) and Moses(P), then it's good enough for me..." and GF Haddad's refutation of moderate Muslim Amjad Moiz (aka 'The Learner') can be found here.

Even those Muslims who try to defend Muhammad's marriage to a 9 year-old would not allow such a thing to their own daughter. I knew one Salafi family that followed their Khalifah to Afghanistan (pre 911) but when their beloved leader tried to marry their 12 year-old daughter to one of the Mujahideen they fled back to (Kafir) UK.
