  • All mixed-up (ethnic/national background)
     OP - April 06, 2009, 08:40 PM

So looking around the forum it seems there are a lot of fellow half-breeds around here. I'm half Egyptian and Irish-American, though I look a lot more like the Irish side-- my dad and I look very different-- he's short and dark, I'm tall and fair-skinned. So the Q-Man has a new question: How many here are of mixed ethnicity? I mean mixed in terms of parents or grandparents from different cultures in different parts of the world. So someone who's half-Polish and half-Scottish wouldn't count as "mixed" for purposes of this poll (by my personal definition), nor would someone who's half Berber Algerian and half Arab Egyptian. Rule of thumb-- if the countries/ethnic groups your ancestors are from are close geographically, and share a generally similar culture and religion and skin tone, I wouldn't consider that mixed.

That being said, that's just my personal opinion. Race and ethnicity being nebulous concepts, please respond however you personally identify.

The follow-up question is how having parents from different ethnicities, cultures or nationalities may have affected your upbringing or adult life (if at all), besides making you good-looking and intelligent as we know all mixed-race kids are. For the non-mixed folks, feel free to tell us half-breeds how jealous you are of our good looks, intelligence and charm (yeah, what the fuck, I figured I'd throw the last one in too).

Personally I think it's really cool when I tell people I'm "African-American" and they have that "What the fuck?" look on their face, or when I tell them my full name (an Arabic name) and they raise their eyebrows.

    fuck you

The ethnic group my parents are both from is a very mixed ethnic group due to genetic diversity and historical mixing, an example of such ethnic groups are: Greek, Italian, Spanish, Bulgarian, Turkish, Persian, Albanian,Indian etc etc. My parents are very differant in phenotype, class and regional ancestry so I would say yes (despite your rule of thumb-if ethnicity isn't defined by phenotype and region then what is it?)

I'm not going to say what ethnic group it is though.

On a serious note, my parents came from the UK (Dover) and Germany (Prussa). But they don't retain many cultural links.

My dad's Persian-Zoroastrian, Mom's Bohra Muslim-Indian with possibly some Yemeni blood. I think that is mixed.

Scandinavian. I'm not aware of any other racial background in my family, although I am darker than most Scandinavians.

The poll missed the one about being from a pure race, and the one about being from the master race.

Half Scots-Irish and half Ashkenazi Jew.  Mum's side of the family are dark complexioned with the signature dark, thick, curly hair of most Jews whilst Dad's side is tall, lanky with fair skin.  I ended up with Dad's complexion and Mum's hair, i.e. super-pale with a Jew-fro.

Growing up I was blissfully ignorant of most of the beliefs and practices of my predominantly Christian neighbours and friends such as having no idea what Lent was or the purpose of Easter but at the same time I did not get much grounding in the Reform Jewish faith in which my mum was raised, mainly because of her antipathy to religion although I would always celebrate Shabbos and Hannukah with my grandparents and enjoyed the odd bowl of matzo ball soup, YUMMY!!!

My father, although raised Catholic pretty much thumbed his nose at the Catholic church and it's teachings....like most Catholics I know.

I think being brought up in a non-religious environment was one of the best things to happen to me & my brother!
