  • About the Sharia Law
     OP - April 07, 2009, 09:52 PM

    Hi everyone,

I'm currently working on a new video- this time regarding the Sharia Law. I know what I really want to say, but I want to have a balanced stance. I looked on Wikipedia, and in it, the information looks completely biased. The article hardly touches on the criticism of the Sharia Law. What's worse is that it mostly quotes Pro-Islamic writers, like John Espisito, and Karen Armstrong. I'm fine with hearing what they have to say, but I also would like to know the other side.

So please, list the well known criticisms of the Sharia Law. I have my own criticisms, but, I'd like to hear further criticism from you fine people.

If you're an ex-Muslim, and your decision to leave Islam was greatly affected by the implication of the Sharia Law, then please share your experience, along with your criticism. I'd like to hear it. The Sharia Law played played a minor role in my decision to apostate, but I know there are others here where the Sharia played a bigger role.

     thnkyu

Sharia law was always at the back of my head, but not my reason for apostacy, so all I ever knew about it was that it was brutal and people lost their fingers and hands depending on how many times they had been warned.

Sharia law is just not 'just'.

    - Women are not equal to men under sharia.
    - Non-Muslims also are treated differently under sharia than Muslims.
    - Of course there's the amputation and stonings that are recommended.
    - The criminalisation of sex outside marriage between 2 consenting adults is farcical.
    - Stifling of freedoms, religion, speech, art, comedy, etc

How such a high percentage of Muslims could say they want Sharia implemented in the West I can't understand.

Knowing Islam is the only true religion we do not allow propagation of any other religion. How can we allow building of churches and temples when their religion is wrong? Thus we will not allow such wrong things in our countries. - Zakir Naik

Most people (especially non-muslims) equate Shariah law with the Hudood penalties, but Shariah covers way more than that. For example, and I've mentioned this before but it's a sore point for me, my mother was not allowed to attend the funeral of her only remaining brother when he died. Under Shariah law, banshee-wailing and expressions of grief from the weaker sex means women cannot attend funerals.

I remember such polls and they were asking Muslims if they wanted aspects of sharia implemented and the tabloids went "OH MY GOD! 70% OF MUSLIMS WANT SHARIA LAW IN THIS COUNTRY! THEY ARE GOING TO TAKE OVER TOMORROW AND WE MUST DEFEND IT WITH OUR LIVES!!!!!!!!!".

But the ones that spew their mouths about how they would love to live in a sharia state are probably all mouth and no trousers and I would love to see these idiots living in lovely, suburban england go to live in Saudi Arabia. I bet they wouldn't be shouting about how wonderful a sharia state is then!

That's pretty saddening Pazuzu. I understand why it's a sore point for you.

But regarding funerals, I thought it was men who couldn't show grief.

You can check out this site Tommy-its called Muslims against Shariah, it claims to be made by some reformist Muslims, although a few posters on CEOMB have doubted that this site is run by Muslims.
Nevertheless, they have good intentions & they're not Ali Sina\Robert Spencer types.

Doesn't Shariah let men get away with marital rape?

Also domestic violence is justified under Shariah. It also has a low minimal age rate for marriage but that differs depending on what country you are in.

Yes. It does not recognise marital rape. A woman has to give her husband sex whenever he wants it (even if she doesn't) except if it is her time of the month. I don't think a husband has to give his wife sex whenever she demands it though. From what I have seen from Islamic scriptures, it seems that they thought that sex was something that a husband wanted and a wife had to put up with. They couldn't conceive that a wife might want to enjoy sex as well.

I think that under sharia, there is no minimum age for marriage, just when they reach puberty.

A husband has to give the wife sex too when she demands it but I cant remember if that was based on a hadith or just sugar-coating, anyone know?

Probably, I swear I came across a hadith that stated that but it might just be my imagination.

I heard that Shari'a law came from Babylonian Jewish law of Talmud.
