Most of the people initially involved in setting up respect were members of the Socialist Workers Party - I used to be a member myself . The SWP is a trotskyist organisation , which , at the time I was a member , considered equality between the sexes , freedom of choice ( on abortion and sexuality ) , free speech and opposition to tyranny as core values . It also viewed religion as very much the opium of the people , nationalism as a scoundrels refuge and fairness and work as important .
The british population having inexplicably refused to join the revolution , most ex-members like myself have contented ourselves with crying in our beer and hoping some vaguely inspirational ( or at least not totally despicable..) individual might emerge to revitalise the labour party , or even the lib-dems . But a smaller , more ruthless group appears to have spotted a growing demographic , and an opportunity to cash in on anger about a war ,and decided it's worth jettisoning all those tiresome principles in favour of one last push for power
