  • The Worlds Stupidest Story - Do barbers exist?
     OP - May 25, 2009, 07:02 PM

Man went to a barbershop to have his hair cut and his beard trimmed. As the barber began to work, they began to have a good conversation.

They talked about so many things an d various subjects. When they eventually touched on the subject of allah, the barber said: "i don't believe that allah exists."

    "why do you say that?"

asked the customer. "well, you just have to go out in the street to realize that allah doesn't exist. Tell me, if allah exists, would there be so many sick people? Would there be abandoned children? If allah existed, there would be neither suffering nor pain.

I can't imagine a loving allah who would allow all of these things."

the customer thought for a moment, but didn't respond because he didn't want to start an argument.

The barber finished his job and the customer left the shop.
I came accross this story today.

    Quote
Just after he left the barbershop, he saw a man in the street with long, stringy, dirty hair and an untrimmed beard. He looked dirty and unkempt.

The customer turned back and entered the barber shop again and he said to the barber: "you know what? Barbers do not exist."

"how can you say that?" asked the surprised barber. "i am here, and i am a barber. And i just worked on you!"

"no!" the customer exclaimed. "barbers don't exist because if they did, there would be no people with dirty long hair and untrimmed beards, like that man outside."

"ah, but barbers do exist! That's what happens when people do not come to me."

"exactly!" affirmed the customer. "that's the point ! Allah, too, does exist! That's what happens when people do not go to him and don't look to him for help. That's why there's so much pain and suffering in the world."

This is meant to be one of them stories which is saying that arguments against the existence of God are stupid.

My question is this. Why do religious people never understand a point and always go off on a tangent?!

The barber could have said back that there is less pain and suffering in societies which concentrate on medicine and social welfare, which are normally the ones who have stopped passively waiting for Allah to help and started looking for their own solutions.

    Confirmation bias, I spose.

Plenty of religious people do indeed suffer a lot of pain.

The unlived life is not worth examining.

I hate it when religious people quote stories like that then look self-satisfied as if they just proved God exists.

There are so many things wrong with that story I don't know where to begin.

OK, first of all God could end all suffering in a blink - he doesn't need anyone to come to him. Second - a great many people do come to God and still suffer. Third, why does God hide himself then say "Why didn't you come to me?" - Fourth why does God have to set this little test? Doesn't he know what we're going to do? Does he need an excuse to blame/punish some of us? etc...

Quick question Hass - The God that you speak of, the one that can end suffering instantly etc - I thought you'd already established in your own mind that  'He' doesn't, and never has existed, so why do you keep going back to the same argument? It's seems like you have got stuck on it, along with the eternal fire and the notion that one doesn't need a religion to have a healthy set of morals. Who are you asking/arguing with here? A religious fruitcake ain't gonna listen, which leaves those that agree with you, who already thinks it's bollocks. Know what I mean??

    Ha Ha.

Bit harsh Jack. Hassan was just pointing out the inconsistencies with the story in the OP.

He was saying IF God exists, then such and such absurdities. It's a form of argument called Reductio Ad Absurdum.

And philosophizing doesn't just have instrumental value (to convince people) but also intrinsic value (to revise over your own beliefs and train your reasoning skills).

The unlived life is not worth examining.
