  • Voting for your MEP
     OP - May 27, 2009, 12:46 PM

Okay, already posted on the UK Voters thread, but here it is again for people deliberately avoiding that thread.

There was a table published on Monday by Open Europe ranking MEPs on their actual attendance at the EU Parliament, their voting habits for transparency, openness, democracy, fighting waste, and fighting misuse of EU funds an MEPs expenses. So at least we know who definately not to vote for.

    Here are the top 10;

=1. Caroline Lucas, Green Party, South East England
    =1. Struan Stevenson, Conservative, Scotland
=1. Alyn Smith, Scotting National Party, Scotland
    4. Diana Wallis, Liberal Democrat, Yorkshire and Humber
    5. Jim Allister, Independent (formerly DUP), Northern Ireland
=6. Derek Clark, UKIP, East Midlands
=6. Fiona Hall, Liberal Democrat, North East England
=6. Malcolm Harbour, Conservative, West Midlands
=10. Chris Heaton-Harris, Conservative, East Midlands
    =10. Gerard Batten, UKIP, London
=10. Liz Lynne, Liberal Democrat, West Midlands

    The bottom 10 are;

    1. David Sumberg, Conservative, North West England
=2. John Whittaker, UKIP, North West England
=2. Robert Kilroy-Silk, Independent (former UKIP), East Midlands
    4. Trevor Colman, UKIP, South West England
    5. Jonathan Evans, Conservative, Wales
=6. Godfrey Bloom, UKIP, Yorkshire and North Linconshire
=6. Giles Chichester, Conservative, South West England
    8. Nirj Deva, Conservative, South East England
    9. Roger Knapman, UKIP, South West England
=10. Nigel Farage, UKIP, South East England
=10. Baroness Nicholson of Winterbourne, Liberal Democrat, South East England
=10. Densmore Dover, Conservative, North West England
=10. Glenis Willmott, Labour, East Midands

Also ones considered unfit as an MEP

    - Tom Wise, UKIP, East Anglia, being convicted for expenses fraud and facing 7 years prison sentance
    - Ashley Mote, Independent, South East England, imprisoned for 9 months in 2007 for benefit fraud

Omg, I know Nirj Deva. I've seen his face on lots of things recently. He has a pretty cool moustache and beard, but don't worry I won't vote for him  Afro

If I vote for a Conservative MEP, will Nirj Deva get in too?

Depends which part of the country you're in. The South East England region is actually quite big.

    See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_East_England_(European_Parliament_constituency)

    Or you can find yours.

    Your reason for voting Tory?

I wanted to vote Tory because they sent me a leaflet which I read through and which I sympathized with. But I think I've changed my mind to Caroline Lucas of the Green party after that ranking of MPs you provided. I know it might sound stupid that I'm basing my vote on an ambiguous list I found on an internet forum, but to be honest, whatever campaign material I read, I can reasonably expect them to say likeable things which virtually nobody would disagree with. I'd rather base my vote on their actual attendance at the EU Parliament and their voting habits for transparency, openness, democracy, fighting waste, and fighting misuse of EU funds an MEPs expenses, which are all great things to have in an MEP and which fuels your list.

Plus, she has a doctorate and I like to think of myself as a bit of a geniocrat  dance

    Who you gonna vote for?
