  • Woman in a Turban (Perempuan BerkalungSorban)
     OP - June 19, 2009, 08:31 PM

I was in the video store, and saw a movie that is apparently wildly popular in Indonesia right now, called "Perempuan Berkalung Sorban" or Woman in a Turban.
I read the back, and it made me really curious.

Apparently it is about a girl who's father is the Kyai of a salafist islamic school in east Java. She wants to go to Jogya to go to university, but her father thinks she will learn unislamic things... also, she falls in love with this guy, but her father wants to marry her to some other dude.

I found the trailer on youtube, And I'll try to translate:

Ok, first she meets this guy who she gets a cruch on, but he's too old for her or something, so her father says no.
She says she wants to go to university, but her father says no again, she must marry, and he chooses this imam guy... then she she spends a while getting beat up by her husband and yelled at by her dad, and some guy yells about how women have it so good, and they should be greatful.
Then she says something about how If heaven is at the feet of mothers why are women treated so shitty.
They find all her "unislamic books" and a big crowd of the students burns them.
Her mom tells her that this is the lot of a woman's life.
She gets slapped around some more....

    This is the cool part....
Then she confronts the guy she really loves and starts yelling:
"I pray to allah, but he never hears me. He doesnt hear my prayers"
Then she rips her Hijab off and yells:
"Touch me... so I can be free"

Then her hubby shows up like Ike Turner and slaps the crap out of her... drags her out.... and has the madrassa students start stoning her!

I got to check this movie out. Here is the Trailer:

I did Bahasa in school over thirty years ago and it's not hard to learn (but I can hardly rememeber any of it now).  grin12

    The DVD has english subtitles.

Actually I was a bit surprised about it.
Are there similar films from places like pakistan or india, maybe, that deal with those kind of topics?

Wow!  Thanks for the recommend Homer.  I'm gonna try to get my hands on a copy.

The people who made this movie must have had a lot of guts 'cos isn't Indonesia pretty strict about what can & can't be published or filmed about Islam?

there was some islamic film a while ago that came out, called "Life of the Prophet" (I think.. or some other name). Unlike "the messanger", they actually had someone playing muhammed. Some islamic group got real pissed off about it and started yelling "You can't show pictures of the prophet!" The guy responded by saying "It's not a picture of muhammed.... They didnt have camaras back then, stupid!"  Cheesy
    I thought that was funny.

ah, indonesia is a very weird place.

Yes.  It is based on a book which is, unfortunately based upon a true story:
