  • University in Scotland?
     OP - July 04, 2009, 01:19 PM

I am filling out my UCAS application and my teacher wants me to have a rough idea of the 5 universities that i want to apply to.
Is Unis in Scotland good? Anyone been Scotland, how is it like?
I want Universities as far from London as possible and one that offers the option to study aboard.

My choosing of a degree is hard enough with thousands on offer. Is History/Politics in demand? Can i get a decent job with those degrees? Is it universal enough that i can use it aboard when i move?

Edinburgh University has always had an excellent reputation - it is also a brilliant city to be a student in with lots of history and many brilliant cultural and art events going on.

The scottish accent? It's not that bad. I've got cousins there, their accent never seemed too bad.

No particular degree is in demand, the most important thing is to do well so choose a subject you enjoy.  PPE (philosopy, politics & economics) is an interesting subject you might want to look into

I'm studying Philosophy and Ethics for A Level right now and i love Politics. Becoming a Politican or even better working for Amnesty International/NATO would be my ultimate dream job

Well PPE is the good subject to choose in this instance, and might not get as boring as choosing one subject alone.

Will you be able to take the Economics aspect of PPE?

Studying in Scotland is a bit confusing and I still don't fully understand it. You can't do 3 years like you do in England, you have to do 4 years, though I think if you say your an English student they might fast track you into the 2nd year because Scottish Highers (pre-uni qualification) are the equivalent to AS level, and the first year of university in Scotland is equivalent to A2 level. I think. At the end of your course you get what is called a Masters, but I don't think it is the equivalent to a Masters in England. It is equivalent to a Bachelors in England, which is the basic graduate degree. I think.

    That does sound confusing.
My course is three years long, i'm very interested in Stirling and Dundee. History and Politics joint honours. Both do a placement year and have flexibility in modules.

I suck at Maths so that may cut out any economics

I've tried wikipedia and it isn't very clear so if you do apply to a Scottish university make sure you ask your teacher to tell you everything you need to know about them. I was considering Stirling but for some reason I decided against it, I can't remember whether it was because it didn't do the exact course I wanted to study or whether there was something about Welsh universities which was as confusing as Scottish universities.

What are you wanting to do in your placement year?

Placement year i'd love to go Uni aboard, preferably the US/New York so i can get myself some form of experience in the UN. Within Politics one of the modules i will be studying is international war and peace

But i will speak to my teacher first thing tomorrow to get more information on how the scottish system works

I applied for Dundee University and it was very nice...in a gorgeous area. I can't really tell you much about the uni since my course was Contemporary Art + Philosophy of Art....didn't end up going since I wanted to o my foundation course in art before going to uni, and so I deferred. Then I reapplied after my foundation course and got into Goldsmiths college in London Tongue Didn't end up going to that either!!

But I thought Dundee Uni had a very good campus...

What stopped you going the second time? lol

Dundee looks beautiful and i love Scotland's rural areas and has a good reputation for humanities.

Is the second supposed to follow on from the other? It looks like you might be thinking that way so I just thought I would comment on it. Are you doing Politics for A level as well? If so then I guess you know exactly what you're in for with Politics. I was in a similar situation as you in the sense that I did RE for A level and even though I had a Christian teacher, the whole course was basically Philosophy and Ethics. I also did Politics for A level though, and even though I am very interested in Politics, I wouldn't have liked to study Politics. That's probably because I am more interested in Political Philosophy, which isn't usually found in a Politics degree. Politics in education seems to be very much concerned with politics in a historical context, rather than a philosophical one.

So what part of politics would you be willing to spend a long time immersing yourself in the study of?

Getting my results in 10 days infact

European and British politics/history in particula
Not sure if MP is something i am cut out for tho so i might settle for being a parliamentary researcher or something to that caliber.

Well most MPs actually don't have a degree in Politics; a lot of MPs have a degree in Law. If you want to be an MP then just study what you want to study at university because there isn't a specific degree you need to have in order to be one.

If you want to be an independent parliamentary researcher then the same goes, I reckon. A doctorate involves being paid to do research in whatever field you're in, so that might be an option for you. Then at the end of it you have a doctorate, which can only be a good thing, although, depending on what job you apply for, you can be refused a job for being over-qualified, believe it or not.

Perhaps you should pick out a few companies out there who you would like to work for long-term and see what qualifications they typically require.
