    Pakistani people get offended very easily. If I go to Pakistan and I buy one of my cousins a present, I have to buy all the rest of them something similar so as not to offend anyone!

    and when you count up how many cousins, weddings, children people have had it can soon burn a hole in your wallet.. best not going back in the first place, if all they are going to do is talk behind your back & then scoff at what you bought them

    I still go back there. Just don't buy anyone anything! I will probably be going back there in September.

    Because it is my second home and I am very close to people there. I tend to go every year. I kind of have a love/hate relationship with the place!

    This whole ordeal sucks. I thought I was done with it all, and everything had been settled, but apparently it had not. And I am still a criminal for wanting to live my life the way I see fit.

    The only two questions that were in my mind before I decided to travel down there was:

    1 Can I get time off work?
    2 Can I afford it?

    I guess I should not have been so naive. I fuckin hate this crap.

    It all depends on who you hang out with in Pakistan, personally I avoided the lower socio-economic classes, and I had a great time with upper-middle-class to up-class Pakistanis I just loved the weather driving around and the availability of pure coke. Even my wife did not mind me drinking which helped loads.

    I don't know how it is in other muslim communities (arabs, turks etc.) or even in Pakistan but here amongst british pakistanis the culture sucks! Its like the sons can go out, do what they want* with impunity but girls can't even stay out for too long. Even when I'm at uni my dad rings me around 6-7 times in a matter of hours!

    *as long as its out of the local area. The last thing you want is your parents thinking "such a person saw him do that. What are they gonna think of us?"

    The wording of the thread title is a bit too strong. All cultures have their ups and downs. I wouldn't choose to be anything other than an Arab.

    im not sick of being from there. Abood, the OP had his reasons as im sure if you read the post understand, I was simply referring to the nature of the culture itself. All cultures have their ups and downs and tbh there is no culture which i think is overall, in its entirety better than another. They each have their faults and plusses, some perhaps more than others. I don't particularly think western culture is perfect (and im sure most people agree).

    But it does get a bit tiring. I'ts nice to rant. Especially if you want nothing to do with all the drama. There are so many rituals expectations and i have always been questeioning it. I recall as a kid always being told to accept things or getting ambiguous answers if i said/say : "Dad you don't have to take care of your brother all the time. He's a grown man, why do you need to send him money. I mean its like we're loaded just because we live in Canada". Or even, as the Op says, that he was expected to buy gifts for everyone. My dad always says he wont buy anything for anyone, that way they will just all shutup but he never does it Tongue. These are just small things for people to rant about.

    It is the honour stuff that is just absolutely frustrating and annoying.

    Yeh, I know, but like you've implied, recognizing and ranting about the downside of your culture doesn't necessarily mean being sick of where you're from. When people get pissed off and rant, they often forget about the upside of things--that's all I'm saying. I'm not attacking the validity of the rant.

    But why are we debating something that's a year old? Lol.

    Most Bollywood movies nowadays are just cheap imitations of Hollywood movies. There are a few good movies, but a lot of them suck.

    I've heard it's gotten better these days, but I can't confirm through first hand experience. Old bollywood movies are hilarious  Cheesy

    I prefer non-mainstream indian films... the ones that actually deal with profound issues rather than some heroine in a mini skirt traipsing down the alps with her gyrating lover.

    I once saw an Indian movie that seemed to be basically about a couple trying to get rid of a guy. They put him in the freezer, then he got out. They threw him off a mountain, then he walked back up. Then I turned the channel.

    sorry to say but all the 'all cultures have pluses and minuses' crap doesn't cut it for me.

    i'd much prefer a culture than celebrates individuality , enterprise and freedom of speech and expression (the US) than a culture which is collective oriented, honour oriented and tells people to bite their lips on just about everything (most of asia).

    Scandanavian countries are probably a lot better than the US in terms of free speech and individuality. So I have heard.
