Has anyone read his first book "The End of Faith", and if so, what were your thoughts?

     Reply #18 - December 12, 2009, 03:47 PM

I've read it. I thought it was good. Muslims would dismiss some of the things Sam Harris says about the Quran as misquoting or out of context.

I read a lot of anger in his work, and found his solutions were not realistic...

What did you think of his quotations of the verses from the Quran?
  • Re: Sam Harris
     Reply #21 - December 12, 2009, 05:40 PM

Oh I had no problems with any of his quotations. He submitted this work as part of his PhD thesis, which makes his quotations even more credible. It is the progressively harder language used through the book, and the solutions to problems I found unrealistic. It raises ones conscience at the beginning, but does not really offer much hope to rectify the problem - at least thats how it came across to me.

That book changed my life. I was a intellectually lost murtad for a while, then I picked up that big and simply couldn't deny that it wasn't god or islam that was bothering me... but the idea of faith itself that I found ridiculous.

Yeah, I never really got my head around the whole issue of faith. It really is a giant leap in the dark and it's exactly what it is, belief with insufficient evidence, or even a huge lack of it. Religious people always present it as some sort of virtue. When all it really is, is credulity.

I watch his first video. And I don't think he is right,,,,on what he said that education doesn't play a role in how much someone believes or is influenced by a religion...The education does play a role, I believe.  The society (influences, much or little) and the family enviroment/ influences and all sort of enviroments that someone experiences plays a role, in my opinion, actually really much during very young age. And that is proved by looking into history and noticing the development of the way of thinking and morality of people during different periods. Many well educated people tend to finally desert a religion, because they tend to think and analyze to finally realized its errors or at list if they keep their faith, they don't take everything what the religion says literally (specially if its bad) and take action over it , and that is a person who is really educated, in my opinion, that is why in the modern societies people, for example, became muslims and though muslims claim that if someone is muslim they would be so convince of their faith, many of these people who had better educations didn't find it reasonable and deserted it. Because in a deserted way back society, where there is no much information handy, or people don't have facilities to learn, like libraries and internet, tv, and nothing on the streets, nowhere...due to this lack of information the mind will not be estimulated, cos the unconcious mind registers all informations, even though we not concious about them, and that has an effect in the way we think. Even a poster in the street that we ignore as we pass by, what ever information provides, it would be acquired by the uncouncious mind (database) and will have an influence on us, that might be profitable or not...
