    Guy's

Since leaving Islam, have any of you had any issues with cultural or ethnic identity since leaving Islam? It is fairly tied into culture, particularly if you are from an Indo/Pak background.

    Nope.
My culture and ethnicity pre dates Islam but unfortunately that does not mean we do not now have elements of it now incoporated in.

dancing etc. is not very Islamic

    Not at all...
There are 450.000 Jewish, Christian and Atheist Moroccans just in Morocco (rest of the world not included).
    I'm just one of them...

I do "feel not at home" 5 times a day when I'm in Morocco... There are way too many mosques where I live.

The only issue I have is having to follow the culture while at home. I always hated my culture even when I was a muslim. I have never fitted in to it, some of my cousins think I'm weird because I am the complete opposite to the female stereotype of my culture.

I've always had problems with my ethnic and cultural identity.

Oddly enough leaving Islam has eased this problem.

I am me - the Egyptian and the English - and they don't have to battle for supremacy anymore.

I see religion as bullshit and something that I do NOT have to attach to either my Egyptian nor English side of me.

I think it's shit being born a Muslim from a Pakistani family. You are made to feel guilty for having fun, your parents and your people hold you back. No one values culture, creativity, innovation and art. They want to produce obediant robots who lead exactly the same lives.

Pakman, did you find that when you got married, your standing in the family increased massively, and you had a lot more respect than before?

On pak culture marriage is a sign of coming of age and you are suddenly taken seriously by the elders. I couldn't give a shit anyway since I don't have much respect fir them anyhow

I know what you mean. If an unmarried person won a nobel prize, they would still not have as much respect as a married person.

I think what you have stated is the majority. Luckily I come from a family that is very well educated and expect their kids, boys and girls to be independent. Alot of them might draw the line when it comes to religion, but it is rarely discussed. I only ever have one contention with family members, and that is the "just-n-case" muslims. To me if your going to follow religion then do it properly.

I always feel sorry for South Asians in the UK when it comes to Islam and Islamic culture, their culture is practically built around it from the ground up and thus leaving Islam and seperating culture and religion is indeed very difficult.

In fact one of the lines I've read on many apostate testimonys/bios is: "You are betraying your culture......" when it comes to leaving Islam.

"I am ready to make my confession. I ask for no forgiveness father, for I have not sinned. I have only done what I needed to do to survive. I did not ask for the life that I was given, but it was given nonetheless-and with it, I did my best"

Thats the point, you cant if you want you're parents to be happy.  You have to do everything, or they never will be.

When i went Somalia this year, the Islamists stopped a wedding because there was music and dancing which was seen as unislamic (Similar to the one in the video but more explicit)

They are slowly destroying my culture in E Africa :(

But thankfully it continues here. Just went to my aunt's wedding yesterday

Yep, Gawd, Jaysus, Moshe and Ayllah have a tendency to destroy people and their cultures, nationalities and ethnicities.

    Jealous wankers.
