  • Can we all meet online?
     OP - August 19, 2009, 05:21 PM

Hey, just an idea. If we can decide on a certain date for all COEM members (including Kope if wants too... LOL) to meet online in one single thread and see how many can make it.

Actually better still.... If Osmanthus (PBUH) can make us something similar to a Chat room or the Shout box but bigger, something in the line of google talk or MSN embeded into our forum and every body can participate..... just for the fun of it! dance

Chatrooms are a bit different! In Chat rooms you chat line by line and not by a whole paragraph or a whole page.

Posts are good for reading even after several hours or maybe a day or two of the writing. But in the chat room, we actually can chat online as a group with the name of each person who said the sentence sits infront of the sentence....

    Like this:

    RIBS:
    hello there, any body listening?
    IsLame: I am here!
RIBS: welcome to the chat room!
Hassan: whatever happened to the Monty Paython Mo Movie? LOL

    and so on...

I agree with PS among others.

I frequented a human diversity forum for years and years and knew a lot of them longer than I know most of my real friends, but talking to them in live real timme chat was so completely different and really really gave an insight into their characters. Obviously it wasnt like meeting them, and some of you have met each other, but for the rest of us this would be a pretty cool experience.

    It really does change things.

The thing you mention thats different is chatting in real time.  But we can chat in real time here?

Not properly. The chat box is very small and can't tolerate a lot of people and messages. PM's require effort and are an exchange between two people, threads take time to be replied to and same problem as above.

I mean (and I think someone else had a similar concept in mind) like a giant MSN convo with nearly everyone in it, that would be different-and it makes things more personal. People edit posts, messages and chat box entries to suit them, but on a giant chat page or whatever everything comes out, personalities are laid out and you get a good insight into who they are.

Obviously, as I said earlier for someone like you who went to the winter meet up (if I remember reading a thread a while ago correctly) you've met some here and thus you know what they are like, but I don't think many people have.

I think only Osmanthus Almighty, (PBUH), The Great, the Akbar, can say if that is possible or not! yes

There are websites that facilitate this kind of meeting, if it can't work on this website it can work elsewhere. The problem would be schedules, time zones etc.

There is a very big difference between forums and chatrooms. I thought that would be obvious?...

I've had a look at this and it is certainly possible. The only thing that concerns me is server loads. I'd love to use Tufat's FlashChat 5.0 as it is an awesome piece of kit (you can customise the hell out if it to suit yourself)  but it's known for being a bandwidth hog.

One thing you have to understand about any instant messaging system is that they are all very heavy on server queries. Doesn't matter if it's only one or two people but once you have forty or fifty going for it the hits on the server really mount up. We could handle it now, but I'm concerned about future growth. It wouldn't be popular if we had to remove it after having it for some time. I'm thinking that to make it practical it would have to be restricted to certain membergroups or something.

Other option is to do a giant MSN meetup. Load their servers up for free.  Afro

I agree, the other forum I go on is a lot bigger than this place and the servers are fairly good (the guy pays way loads of money for a good job) but when more than 10 people entered the chat room the website would die for at least 15 minutes.

Msn requires a certain amount of trust, maybe a lot of people here wouldn't like the idea of everyone having their msn address, and also, some computers can't handle msn properly, maybe paltalk though? Without mics of course ,or another such open site where you can have custom and private chat rooms. An IRC perhaps?

IRC is definitely an option. The interface is daggy as hell though. Buggers are stuck in the 80's IMO. One thing I can do if people want me to is to make the shoutbox a full page of its own. That is very easy to set up.

Not sure what meeting online would achieve. More interested in real meet ups. Even more in orgies.

Not really, when we already have a shoutbox here.

Still not sure how you will get a better glimpse of someones personality, well more than that what you can get from this forum & its shout box.

Although it might be nice for a change, and perhaps you could create you're own personal avatar or something funky like that..
