  • any arabs?
     OP - August 23, 2009, 04:01 AM

i wonder how many peeps in here are apostate arabs. there's probably a good mixture of persians (myself), turks, pakistanis, malaysians, etc. but probably not too many arabs.

i think rejecting islam has to be really tough for an arab. the whole religion is weaved into their culture and identity. the book and the prayers are written in their native language and the prophet and the successors are their own. for them it must be a source of pride. i wonder if they look at the landscape and admire how deeply and widely their beliefs has permeated throughout the world.

it wasn't difficult for me to reject something foreign, but when it comes to my own culture i could never imagine calling the persian gulf by any other name or rejecting the long persian history. must be the same for them and i can understand that. yes, there are a minority of christian and jewish arabs, but i think without islam, the whole arab culture would unravel and who'd want that for their people.

Well, I think apostising must be difficult for Arabs considering the complete domination of Islam in Arabic culture, at least other cultures (especially Persian) seem to have their own history and non-Islamic customs, but since the advent of Islam Arab culture was destroyed.

Indeed it seems that many Arab apostates turn to Christ rather than nontheism, maybe because there is an Arab christian community that they can sink into?

Emerald as far as I know is the only real Arab here, he is Saudi Arabian. Hassan (if you count Egyptian as Arab because it isn't completely) is half Arab ethnically, not sure if he is culturally or not. I used to be a cultural Arab, but I abandoned that culture well before I abondoned Islam, and I'm not an ethnic Arab at all. I think we have Morrocan members who might call themselves Arabs, but in Morroco that's an issue.

So yeah, Emerald is the only one, and I think the guy's quite brave, especially being from Saudi Arabia, which unlike Iran, has a deeply religious society as well as government.

I am %100 Arab! I just joined today and love the forums. I'm originally from Jordan, but currently living abroad in the U.S. It took me about 4 years to leave Islam, but till this day I cannot fully escape it. The culture and many other things consist of Muslim traditions/ritual, if not, then it must at least have something to do with the word Allah or Bismallah:(.

Edit: I am currently an Atheist.

I did not know Wisam is from KSA.... that has to be the bravest event in this forum! From the birth place of Mo? That is brave man!  13

There are other Atheist sites and forums in Arabic that I have seen but never participated or registered in.

I preferred this forum because to be honest I wanted to post in English obviously for security reasons. bunny

I have been to el7ad.com, but not writing a word in Arabic in 7 years has discouraged me. My spelling is extremely awful, and I need to work on my MSA skills. I still read a few posts on there every now & then, I'm also working on my MSA skills, so I can become active on there in the near future.

It's been a long time since I posted.

I'm an Arab apostate from Kuwait. I had the exact notions when I abandoned Islam. "What am I culturally?" To this day I cannot answer this question. In Kuwait we're taught to brag so much about being Arab, speaking the language of the Quran and all that stuff.

The whole language contains religious phrases. Even our culture and habits are derived from Islam. There are some Arab families in KSA, Kuwait, Syria and Jordan who still have some pre-Islamic habits. Some of them even know pre-Islamic poetry which contains the names of Pagan gods.

Even Arab culture on its own is very diverse. People from the Levant and North Africa seem to have pre-Islamic habits. But here in the Gulf, we only have Islamic habits. No culture of our own seeing as Muhammad destroyed it during his reign of terror.

I never realised how hard it would be for Arabs to leave Islam compared to others.
I should have known that seeing Islam and their culture is so entwined.

That is one thing i should be grateful about i suppose, i keep my culture and just ditch the religion

Islam is a great success story for Arabs so leaving it involves giving up something which one derives immense pride from.

Take the Pakman challenge and convince me there is a God and Mo was not a murdering, power hungry sex maniac.

Historically this was an important question we with little external influence, we were often a product of the region we were born in.

Now its not such an important question, as we are governed by other factors including TV, books, telephone, internet etc so as this forum is testamount too, the place you were born is irrelevent to who you are.

I have Arab and Berber blood... Cool
It's not that hard for me personally...
There are 300.000+ Jews of Moroccan origin in Israel + 450.000 non-muslim Moroccans in Morocco.
Not being a muslim doesn't make me less Moroccan or anything. Cool

But Arabs usually don't care about statistics, they only care about Pride... =_=

Yep - I have thought and said the same thing.

I'm half Arab but my identity has always been a confusing issue for me.

yep, cool, more arabs here than i'd suspected. perhaps the culture can go on if/when it ditches the superstition. as an ajam (somewhat derogatory arabic term for persians) i don't feel less pride in my culture knowing that the 3 once popular persian religions (zoroastrianism, manism, mithraism) are no longer widely followed. i consider them as a part of the persian history. i'm sure those religions had their share of vices just like any other and of course just as superstitious.
