  • What song do you want at your funeral?
     OP - August 23, 2009, 02:28 PM

Thought this be a fun thread....in a morbid kind of way Smiley

I'd have to with an old Irish ditty, Finnegans Wake. So my friends can drink toasts to me, and generally have a good time.
Then end it with anacoustic version of Cease, to close it out on a real emotional note.

(ps. I just found this clip on the internet, and kind of inspired the whole thread. Great song, from a great band)

I'd have the Benny Hill music, and then loads of women in bikinis would run around all over the place. That would make it a little less morbid!

I've actually given some thought to this. Many years ago when I was living a fairly reckless life I gave my best friend a list of songs that were to be played at my wake/funeral. Among them were more than a few Pogues songs. Top on the list:

"Down In The Ground Where the Dead Men Go"-- This is actually an early version I had not heard before today. I love the death screams/wails at the end. Whenever I'm playing this in my car I let out blood-curdling screams at the end:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g7Yww1OTgp4

"Body of an American"-- Love this fuckin song. It was used in "The Wire" for a policeman's wake early in the series and Jimmy McNulty's faux-wake at the end:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EVEwpYt0EwE&feature=related

Also, "Curse of a Fallen Soul" by the Dropkick Murphys:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPRzugaPm-8

There's some Rolling Stones, Social Distortion, Bruce Springsteen and other good stuff on that list, but I figured those three are a good sample.

Not to be morbid or anything, but this is something I have often thought about, and I have updated a list that I've kept throughout the years of what is supposed to happen at my funeral.  Really, the whole thing should be music.  And having a good time. I also have the menu planned.  And the dress code.

Believe me, was quite a conundrum when I was supposed to be this very good Muslimah to want music at my funeral.  Thinking hard  Especially because I knew if I was gone, they wouldn't follow my wishes or allow them if they were 'haram'.  I sure as hell didn't want people sitting three days stuffing themselves and drinking qahwa and gossiping with brief interruptions to read Quran and have some shrill bitch come in and talk about the perils of hellfire so they can all cry and then go back to smoking and qahwa and then say 'mush'allaah, she was such a good person yarhamha'allaah' or some shit like that.  I really did not want a proper Muslim funeral at all, and one of my stipulations was that women be allowed to attend every step of the process because fuck that 'women not allowed' bullshit. That pissed me off.

I want Death Cab for Cutie 'I will follow you into the dark' because it is about death and not having heaven or hell.  But I don't choose songs for their meanings or relations to death, but because I figure people can stand a few hours listening to the music I like.

    http://www.youtube.com/v/Am0IFwjPyYA&hl=en&fs=1&

This song by Arcade Fire bc it is one of my faves (studio version is better sounding, but I like this performance).  When I 'discovered' Arcade Fire, that is what started me on the long journey back to earth from planet Islam.

    http://www.youtube.com/v/He1Yq_D7Jv0&hl=en&fs=1&

Pixies.  Extensive selections from the Pixies song catalog shall be played.

    http://www.youtube.com/v/2mCoOlUjhlc&hl=en&fs=1&

    New Pornographers.

    http://www.youtube.com/v/bHWWWa8EvzI&hl=en&fs=1&

    Because I'm dead.

    http://www.youtube.com/v/sDfau1cmAmE&hl=en&fs=1&

    Pogues.

    http://www.youtube.com/v/DrBLqp-s__o&hl=en&fs=1&

Bob Dylan, U2, 'Speak Lord / God is tryin' to tell you something', because I do like gospel music even if I don't believe anything the words tell me.  I'll stop now, but let me just say. It's very long.  I should probably make it into a play list now rather than relying on them to get all the songs right. Thinking hard

People better have a good time or I will come back and haunt their asses.
