  • Islam Channel Petition
     OP - August 26, 2009, 11:08 PM

We need to get a Petition against the Islam Channel going. This channel is funded by the Saudi regime, its founder and CEO is a convicted terrorist and on Interpol's most wanted list and they regularly host extreme wahabi and Islamist speakers who attack the West.

    Who is in?

Take the Pakman challenge and convince me there is a God and Mo was not a murdering, power hungry sex maniac.

The founder of this channel supports the death penalty for apostates (as any Muslim who follows the sunnah of Muhammad should do)...

He also supports child abuse (listen from 6:00mins onwards)...

the UK via satellite.. and probably the rest of the world too!  Loads of people are, particularly those that are retired, are hooked on it and pretty much watch it all day long.

Hmmm. Ok, so if it is being broadcast by satellite it will be difficult or impossible to block.

It is broadcast via Sky (satellite) or Virgin Media (cable). Hence it can be banned from transmission over those providers to which people pay a subscription fee.

Knowing Islam is the only true religion we do not allow propagation of any other religion. How can we allow building of churches and temples when their religion is wrong? Thus we will not allow such wrong things in our countries. - Zakir Naik

Will the UK's hate speech laws cover this do you think?

I wouldn't rely on lame British laws to do anything. People have a real issue condemning brown fascists in the UK. I think we should produce a document highlighting the extremists channels and raise some awareness. Left unchecked these fuckers will brainwash a whole new generation of young Muslims.

Sounds good. Reason I asked is because I was wondering how the petition was going to get a result. It wont be through commercial pressure because you'd need enough sigs to counter the revenue from this station's audience before Sky and Virgin would do anything, plus if it looked like being threatened the station would just broadcast a "call to arms" and work up a counter-petition. That left me thinking that really you would need to hit them on legal or human rights grounds to have any impact.

What is worse, the Islam Channel or Peace TV? I reckon Peace TV is a lot worse. The Islam Channel is quite watered down really whereas Peace TV is not, and Peace TV is a lot more popular.

Zakir Naik appears on it as well. I never understood the guy as far as his absurd logic was concerened, but even worse was his dress style! A suit with half mast trousers and a shirt with a collar size that you could hula hoop in!

He has half mast trousers because he is following the sunnah.

How exactly do you distinguish hate speech from free speech. If you stop these garbage channels, cant they lawfully or atleasht justifably stop anti islamic articles or cartoons?

    Just a thought.

Wow. Is there a hadith for that?

Abu Hurairah (RA) reported: The Prophet (SAW) said,

"What is below the ankles of a lower garment is condemned to the Fire (Hell).'' (Al-Bukhari)

Abu Dharr (RA) reported: I heard the Prophet (SAW) saying, "There are three to whom Allah will neither speak on the Day of Resurrection nor will look at them nor purify them (i.e., of their sins), and they will be severely tormented.'' When he repeated this (statement) thrice, Abu Dharr (RA) said: "They are doomed and destroyed! (But) who are they, O Messenger of Allah (SAW)?'' He said, "One whose lower garment trails, one who boasts of kindness shown to another; and one who promotes sale of his business by taking false oaths.'' (Muslim)

Abu Hurairah (RA) reported: the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said to a man who was performing Salat while his lower garment was trailing, "Go and perform your Wudu' again.'' That man went and came back having performed it. The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said (again), "Go and perform your Wudu'.'' Someone present said to Messenger of Allah (SAW): "O Messenger of Allah! You ask him to perform his Wudu' and then you kept silent (without saying the reason for it).'' He (SAW) said, "He performed Salat while his lower garment was below his ankles. Allah does not accept the Salat of a man who trails his lower garment.'' (Abu Dawud)

    My thoughts on this.. Smiley

I don't think it'd ever be easy  to identify intended hate speech. The best thing to do is to allow all speech and refute possible hate speech. This would be easily possible on 'democratic platforms' where everyone gets an equal opportunity to speak, like on Internet forums or Youtube.

But in the case of 'elevated' or 'privileged' platforms, which are not accessible for refutation to the common folk either because
    - of huge capital investement involved (1), (like a TV channel)
    - or the platform has the umbrella of respect because of
--  'popularity' (2) (say, like BBC, RDF or Pat Condell)
--  'religion' (3) (which licenses any sort of indoctrination be it good, or bad since it is thought to be good like in the case of mosque or church sermons),
    treatment could be different.

Islam channel satisfies 1 and 3

One way to address this this is to get this issue notified on equal platforms like the BBC, Guardian or Channel 4. When it's known that Islam channel and Peace TV are evidently engaged in radicalizing, and thus misusing their privilege, it'd probably make them less respectable so that even official Muslim bodies in UK would be forced to shun them.  Then parents wouldn't allow children to watch them and the cable providers also would feel ashamed to broadcast them.

Btw, some time back, on BBC4 radio, Marcus Brigstocke, after he gave a strong bashing on Christianity, told "You wouldn't say that about Islam, eh?.... Here goes..all the beheadings, pedophilia, etc....Don't worry about me, I've done it before!"

I have a problem with limiting any sort of speech...but I'm not an expert on this and I wouldnt be able to formulate a proper opinion.

Are you guys in the same category as "cant yell fire in a crowd"?
