  • How Authentic is Sahih Bukhari
     OP - August 30, 2009, 05:07 PM

I was reading about the Sahih Bukhari collection of hadiths and was thinking that it must have been a superhuman feat.

The book is a work of 16 years by Muhammad ibn Ismail al-Bukhari. It is said that al-Bukhari collected 300000 hadiths. So lets say, even if he never ever travelled, never slept and concentrated on this work constantly for 16 years without a break, that is 28 minutes per hadith. 28 minutes on average to analyse every hadith and write down each hadith.

If we take into account that he travelled far and wide, obviously had to sleep and eat, that can't have given him much time to analyse the isnad at all.

He probably had help. What those old folks use to quaintly call slaves. Many of the hadiths are repeats, with different sanad.  Or there may be different hadith with the same sanad.

But having sanad doesn't mean that it's not all made up or a game of telephone anyway.  The existence of the book or even stipulating that Bukhari was a meticulous researcher and all around nice fellow doesn't make these hadiths true or authentic, that's the point to keep driving home.  There is no proof for every single one of them.  They are rated authentic because of his opinion of the character of the people he heard them from and the character of those they told him they heard it from and how closely the content relates to, in all honesty, was the prevailing interpretation of the Quran in his time.

There is serious doubt over the entire hadith collections - including the so-called Sahih collections of Bukhari and Muslim. Chains of authority (Isnads) are not a reliable way of authenticating anything. They are easy to fabricate and it is well known many were.

Works have been written by people like Ignaz Goldziher and Joseph Schacht, which point out some of the errors and fallacies in the hadith literature.

I really question the authenticity of both the Sihah al-Sittah (Bukhari, Muslim, Ibn Majah et al.) and the Shia favoured Usool al-Kafi as well.  wacko
