     OP - August 30, 2009, 09:04 PM

    Hi
I am decided to stop being a muslim for about 1 year now. I am interested very much in hinduism. One of the ways of converting is by giving up your muslim identity i.e. having a name change.
Has any one on the forum given up their muslim identity by having a name change ? Do you like being called by your muslim name ?

    Your thoughts please ?

I did think about changing my name when I was a kid - but not now.

May I ask why you are thinking of converting to Hinduism?

    What attracts you to it?

Are you from the Indian Sub-continent?

You want to follow the religious way of life that your ancestors did -  Do you believe that you were preordained to follow Hinduism?

Are you an Asian from India/Pakistan?

Are your family still Muslim? (How do they feel?)

So are you motivated to become Hindu because you feel an urge to rediscover your ancestral roots?

Or because you are convinced Hinduism is true?

I can relate to that - though if you don't mind me saying I suspect it has more to do with finding an identity than a religion to believe in.

I don't blame you, I'm sick and tired of having a Muslim name and identity, no offence to anyone but I'm getting rid of it as soon as it is convenient.

Maybe something nice and an identity that reflects my ancestry, like Kosta Shavelli or Miklos Hovsepian or Dmitar Roschetopv

eh, I've got plenty of time to think of it later.

If I ever have kids, I definitely won't give them Islamic names. I will probably give them urdu or persian names. Its just something I remember my dad saying when I was asking my sister if Omar Sharif was a Muslim. My dad said "Of course he is a Muslim! His name is Omar Sharif!"

I called my kids Persian names.  Talking about names, have any apostates called their kids Mohammed?

Fareed or Farid is not an Islamic name! You are lucky. Muslim names usually start by Abdul and Mohamed of course...

Aliadiere I used to be guilty of the same stuff, whenever I would hear of a celebrity or a famous person with a remotely Muslim name I would get happy and assume they were Muslim, if I found out it wasn't true I would then feel scorn and contempt for the person for stealing "our" name.

This in itself is kind of typical of the us and them attitude that some Muslims in the West have.

I'd recommend getting rid of "Mohammed", it adds at least 4 hours delay at an American airport from my experience. I was interrogated at a US airport, nicely though, by a nice officer called Randy who helped me catch the next available plane after the questioning. Happened to dad another time too.

I'm going to change my name: either to Mr Wildstomp, or to Orlando Godhando. I think the latter is most likely!

I've thought about it, but never bothered. I was never Muslim, but my father was and I have a Muslim first and middle name and Arabic last name, which is a pain at airports and just generally a pain in the ass to explain to people when they ask if I'm Muslim. Whatever, I'm keeping it until I have a compelling reason to change it.

Having a Muslim name can be an inconvenience and a disadvantage in some circles in the West. I go to customers and you can tell a change in attitude with some after they hear my name.

I always think that my ancestors from India would have had Arab/Muslim names forced onto them and hence my name does not reflect my ancestry. But not sure if I'm up to all the hassle of changing it.

My ancestors would have been Hindus too. But I'm not sure about jumping from 1 God to Many Gods is a wise idea.

Though some of Hindu philosophy such as ahimsa (non-violence) is appealing, I've also done a bit of Yoga which is very good, believing and worshipping elephant headed or monkey gods is not so inviting.

My name's Mohammed and they never stopped me once in the airport-either in the UK or America. Maybe I got lucky.

I was always glad that I had a western name (because I'm a convert) and didn't have to take too much crap at the airport, I was just a guy with a beard.

I chose to get circumcised at 17, don't tell me I never believed.
