It is an American tradition, like apple pie or 4th of July.  You can't judge anothers culture!

So once again I'm left with the classic Irish man's dilemma, do I eat the potato or do I let it ferment so I can drink it later?

But who prays for Satan? Who, in eighteen centuries, has had the common humanity to pray for the one sinner that needed it most?

    Mark Twain is brilliant!  yes

Some more priceless stuff from him:

"We began to stir against slavery. Hearts grew soft, here, there, and yonder. There was no place in the land where the seeker could not find some small budding sign of pity for the slave. No place in all the land but one—the pulpit. It yielded at last; it always does. It fought a strong and stubborn fight, and then did what it always does, joined the procession—at the tail end. Slavery fell. The slavery text remained; the practice changed, that was all."

"During many ages there were witches. The Bible said so. the Bible commanded that they should not be allowed to live. Therefore the Church, after eight hundred years, gathered up its halters, thumb-screws, and firebrands, and set about its holy work in earnest. She worked hard at it night and day during nine centuries and imprisoned, tortured, hanged, and burned whole hordes and armies of witches, and washed the Christian world clean with their foul blood. Then it was discovered that there was no such thing as witches, and never had been. One does not know whether to laugh or to cry..."

"When I, a thoughtful and unblessed Presbyterian, examine the Koran, I know that beyond any question every Mohammedan is insane; not in all things, but in religious matters. When a thoughtful and unblessed Mohammedan examines the Westminster Catechism, he knows that beyond any question I am spiritually insane. I cannot prove to him that he is insane, because you never can prove anything to a lunatic--for that is a part of his insanity and the evidence of it. He cannot prove to me that I am insane, for my mind has the same defect that afflicts his..."

"I do not believe in the creed professed by the Jewish Church, by the Roman Church, by the Greek Church, by the Turkish Church, by the Protestant Church, nor by any Church that I know of. My own mind is my own Church."

[Thomas Paine, The Age of Reason]

"It is necessary to the happiness of man that he be mentally faithful to himself. Infidelity does not consist in believing, or in disbelieving; it consists in professing to believe what one does not believe. It is impossible to calculate the moral mischief, if I may so express it, that mental lying has produced in society. When man has so far corrupted and prostituted the chastity of his mind, as to subscribe his professional belief to things he does not believe, he has prepared himself for the commission of every other crime."

[Thomas Paine, The Age of Reason]

"Priests and conjurors are of the same trade."

[Thomas Paine, The Age of Reason]

"The most formidable weapon against errors of every kind is reason. I have never used any other, and I trust I never shall."

[Thomas Paine, The Age of Reason]

"Revelation is necessarily limited to the first communication-- after that it is only an account of something which that person says was a revelation made to him; and though he may find himself obliged to believe it, it can not be incumbent on me to believe it in the same manner; for it was not a revelation made to ME, and I have only his word for it that it was made to him."

[Thomas Paine, The Age of Reason]

Equality is not a concept. It is not something we should be striving for.  It is a necessary.  Equality is like gravity. We need it to stand on this earth as men and women, and the misogyny in every culture is not a true part of the human condition.  It is life out of balance and that imbalance sucks something out of the the soul out of every man and woman who is confronted with it.  We need equity, kind of now."  Joss Whedon on equality for women.

"Who what am I? My answer: I am the sum total of everything that went before me, of all I have been seen done, of everything done to me. I am everyone everything whose being-in-the-world affected was affected by mine. I am anything that happens after I've gone which would not have happened if I had not come. Nor am I particularly exceptional in this matter; each "I," every one of the now-six-hundred-million-plus of us, contains a similar multitude. I repeat for the last time: to understand me, you'll have to swallow a world."

    ~ Salman Rushdie, Midnight's Children

The most excellent and divine counsel, the best and most profitable advertisement of all others, but the least practiced, is to study and learn how to know ourselves. This is the foundation of wisdom and the highway to whatever is good-Pierre Charron.

When I hear somebody sigh, "Life is hard," I am always tempted to ask, "Compared to what?"

As I grow to understand life less and less,
I learn to love it more and more.

Its possible "that the reason Muhammad prohibited drawing his picture was because he was conscious of his facial and bodily deformities.

He preferred people pay more attention to his message rather then his looks.

Under scrutiny, his message seems to be even uglier than his looks"
