did you see the "Human Family" special on NatGeo thats been running lately? Cool show, kind of gave me the idea of doing it myself...but decided I didnt really care enough to spend money.

Personally, I made a decision to ditch all ancestral baggage a while ago, and didnt really care to be tied to my parents homeland, much less my great great great great great great grandfathers.  Maybe I'm weird like that, but I just think it is silly...I am who I am, and am where I am, and that's all that matters.... and anyway, it all goes back to africa in the end.

Thats true, I'm just curious.  It will give me a better understanding of how I developed into what I am and the timings of various journeys, and historical/cultural conditions and travesties that were faced by my ancestors in getting there.  Also its interesting to talk about to my family and tell my kids. From it they might learn  about evolution and take a greater interest in history and less myopic than I ever was.

It might even throw in some shockers (e.g. that we are not decendents of Muhammed) or that I have eskimo ancestry (I sleep with the windows open in the bedroom even in the winters)

I dont think it is that expensive either, given the amount of knowledge it gives you and the next generations to come.

The difference Islame is that the more expensive one you quoted gives you an exact result of your haplotype rather than an estimate.

Now-this would be useful-but these guys are already giving you an ethnic background and migration routes (If I read correctly) so you don't need to know the haplotype for what you want. So there is no need for the more "deluxe package" with this company.

    Dude, IsLame,
I have so much family in Uttar Pradesh,
Both my parents are from that area, and I happen to know that our ancestry does trace back through Afghanistan and near eastern Persia. Maybe that'll give you a heads up.

You are welcome. I hope the tests prove to be satisfying and intriguing and I hope you learn a lot from them. It is nice for those of us who are curious to truly rediscover our heritage and roots. Some people think it's superficial, but there is a beauty and an excitement for some.

Anyway, I hope the tests are as comprehensive yet useful as you wanted. You will have to tell me what they said if you don't mind (unless it's personal information) because I don't know much about genebase-beyond some good reviews. What tests did you order? Paternal plus maternal or just paternal? Also, did you get one for your wife?

    I hope you enjoy.

Yeah sure, i'll pm you the results (and anyone else if they want to see the kind of thing they send back).

I ordered the paternal side for me as I am in contact with some of my paternal relatives.  Ordered the maternal side for my wife, as it was her mum where she got here oriental looks from (and thats what I need to investigate Wink).

Didnt order both parents for me, as they are both inbreds and from a closed genetic group, so I suspect their results will be the same anyway.

    My results are through  dance

HM, does this mean my subclade is most likely to be R1A or could it be R1a1 but they dont drill dont this far?  Also does the migration route change for R1A over the one shown below for R?

Also, did you get one for your wife?

    I hope you enjoy.

Her results are through too - she's from the causauses too but belongs to a different haplogroup,so I was wrong and is unlikely to belong to Chinese stock..

    .
I have just received an email from them, saying they have just had results come through for someone who shares all the same genetic markers as me, so he's related to within 17 generations of me.  Did you try & establish contact with anyone like that?  His name is LAWRENCE GWOZDZ - sounds like a Jewish or Hungarian name?

Actually he might be Jewish - it would not surprise me.  Apparently they say the reason the R1A haplogroup spread so far & wide & so quickly compared to other genetic groups was because of the domestication of the Ukrainian horse..

Your local GP could tell you.

I wouldn't bother personally because my results would be really boring.  I know my family tree quite far back and its basically Irish all the way back.

I know how it feels Cheetah probably shares 98% DNA with potatoes and we all know how boring potatoes can get.

    Islame,
Did you also trace the mitochorndrial DNA?
Interestingly, for many indo-Pak Muslims Y Chromosomes trace to Afghan-Persian roots but mitochondrial are mainly sub-continental.

Mitochondrial DNAs are from maternal side. Say I get it from my mother, she gets from her. Your kid's wont have your mitochondrial but your wifes.

In many cases, Persian, Turkish or Afghan men came to sub-continent and married local women here. So it is revealed in studies done for many Indain Muslims that their Y chromosomes traces to Arabia or Persia and their mitochondrial DNA traces to sub-continent.

Hmm, If I may be so bold (and a total assh0le at that), it is quite likely that many of those "men coming from outside" were invaders who killed the men and took the women.

Might be true - I wish I could find out, but I guess its impossible..  Food for thought though.

Yes, thats what happened -they initially came from the caucases, then to these areas, and then to the Indian subcontinent.

My ancestors always married from the same group of villages so I assumed it was a closed genetic group, so they would be the same.  Thats what HenriMonier said earlier in this thread, so I decided not to..

I have to test myself one of these days. My grandpa always claimed our ancestors were from Yemen, no one ever believed him though. Most of us look thoroughly bengali - although me, sises and my dad look arab and never had a problem blending in with Kuwaitis and Saudis back in the day. Though we're too dark to blend in with Lebs or Syrians.

I find practically every south asian Muslim feels the need to claim outside heritage. So I've always been skeptical.

It is said that many of us are the descendants of the old Phoenician sailors... I wonder if that is the case with me as well... would be cool.

The Lebanese are also the their descendants.  Lebanon was from where the Phoenicians originated, before they set sail and established colonies around the Mediterranean.

IsLame, if you find a decent clinic please do tell me. I'm also very interested.

Through history, Iraq has been conquered and ruled by various nations. Persians, Hijazans, Mongols, and Turks. Iraq is also quite a multi-ethnic country so it would be nice to know where my ancestors come from.
