Through history, Iraq has been conquered and ruled by various nations. Persians, Hijazans, Mongols, and Turks. Iraq is also quite a multi-ethnic country so it would be nice to know where my ancestors come from.

Yeah, I think genetically Iraqis would have to be one of the craziest genetic mixes on earth.

Iblis has mad debaterin' skillz. Best not step up unless you're prepared to recieve da pain.

Yes we are and you could easily notice it just walking down any street in Baghdad. Most people here don't realize it though. I always get confused stares when I tell Brits I'm Iraqi. People always say "I took you for a Greek or an Italian or maybe a Turk but definitely not an Iraqi". Which is kinda weird as most Iraqis know that I am one even before I tell them.

IsLame, if you find a decent clinic please do tell me. I'm also very interested.

I did - the one I used in the thread.  All they do is post you a swab to brush on the inside of your mouth in a pre-addressed envelope, then a few weeks later you find out your genetic tree..

I just checked you didn't provide a link to the company's website did you?

This sounds really exciting idea. So what do you guys recommend for a UK-based company with decent prices?

Also should I do a paternal or maternal or both? This sounds a bit confusing. What do each method trace exactly?

So I've looked into it, and this site seems to be fairly good for your situation.

and I think this test in particular might be more suited to you but you should look around. It's not hard to understand.

    http://www.dnaancestryproject.com/ydna_intro_ancestry.php

These guys ship to the UK, as with most tests they are based in America but they are friendly to us-as with all tests the results will take ages-but that's just standard. If it's not what your looking for let me know and I will try and find a better one.

Here it is - I just got my paternal line tested, they were  presumably the Islamic invaders that came from Ukraine originally..

See above, it does not need to be UK based, you will get a better & cheaper one posted from abroad which is what i did..

One is our ancestral male lineage, the other your ancestral maternal  lineage..

    Fair enough
One is our ancestral male lineage, the other your ancestral maternal  lineage..

I am sorry if this is stupid, but does it track my mother's lineage to her mother and to her maternal grandmother, etc. is that even possible? Or does it track my mom's lineage in general as it gets vaguer the further they track the DNA?

Because you see my parents are like 4th (paternal) cousins or something so I am not sure that if I did both I will get the different ancestral lineages or they will be (almost) the same and I would have simply wasted my money.

Cool, so you recommend I do both if I want to know more.

Which one did you do BTW, paternal, maternal or both?

    Also http://www.dnaancestryproject.com/ydna_intro_howto.php

It has 2 paternal type of tests, one is $80 more expensive. What does high resolution mean exactly?

Dunno, unfortunately I am not an expert - its one of those subject areas that the more you delve into it, the more fascinating it becomes, you just need the time.

Once you know you haplogroup type, you know which "group" of people you belong to genetically.  Mine was R1A, but there are many different types, some have certain disease resistancies so its interesting to know..  I even know facebook groups that have started up on each haplogroup..

I gleened most of my information from FinallyFree on this subject area, but he's no longer here, but a lot of my knowledge is already contained in this thread..

    Hope that helps

P.S  I would go for the cheapest option (I just did the paternal one, as both my parents were both inbreds in any case) to begin with, you can always get more later if there are any unanswered questions.. for me it sufficed and was very happy I did it..

    Hi infidel:)

It all depends on how much you want to spend really. I would recommend you get a 23&me test done. Testing just your paternal (Y-DNA) and maternal (mtDNA) lines is a waste of money in my opinion since it represents such an insignificant part of your dna.

why is it an insignificant part?  Its  enough to tell you your ancestral migrational path, which is what i was most interested in..

Ye I'm very curious to know my ancestry.

It all depends on how much you want to spend really. I would recommend you get a 23&me test done. Testing just your paternal (Y-DNA) and maternal (mtDNA) lines is a waste of money in my opinion since it represents such an insignificant part of your dna. With 23&me you can know your full autosomal DNA and not just your FTDNA. You can know, with exact precision, how much Caucasian, black, East Asian etc you are. You can also compare your results with other members and know who your genetically most closely related to. It doesn't just end there as you can also know what sort of disease your more prone to. Your Ydna and Mtdna is included aswell. The catch: you'll have to pay atleast $399  lipsrsealed

    Here's their website: https://www.23andme.com

Thanks for the info. But it's quite expensive. If my dad knew I am even thinking of doing this, I'll get heavily scolded  Cheesy. I take it the $399 one include BOTH maternal and paternal right?

Because it only tells you your fathers line of family (goes straight from your father, grandfathers, great grandfather etc). It wouldn't tell you anything about you dad's mother for example. A black person could have a middle eastern y-dna simply because his fiftieth grandfather was a saudi. Do you get what I'm trying to say...lol

I see what you mean.. I would call it insignificant though, as in the past this scenario would have been less likely (particularly in the indian subcontinent) and as a broad measure is still likely to provide you with what you need for things like migratory paths and 10 times cheaper.. but if you want an exact analysis then you are right

    fuck man!
    I wanna do this!

But I want to do the mtdna one and w/ shipping that is around $350!
I was born in shiraz which is only 50 km away from Persepolis (the old persian capital) and the people in the area have been ass raped by people of all sorts! Monguls, turks, greeks, macedonians, arabs lmao
Also my grand father was apparently Qasqai Turk so that means he came from Azerbaijan down south!

    @ Islame
I didn't really understand your results. Did it say where your ancestors were from?

The mtDNA using the company I used is only $80, I think
