Anyone notice that we have recently really been getting  recognised by Google?

I have run lots of random searches in google regarding Islam when I have randomly happened to find a post from this forum come up on the first page of Google!

Anyone else experiencing the same thing - Has it always been like this or is there a reason behind it?

Hey that's good. No it hasn't been like that as far as I'm aware. We must be finally building up some search ranking. How long have you noticed this happening?

Hey I just checked us out on Alexa too:

    http://www.alexa.com/site/linksin/councilofexmuslims.com

    http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/councilofexmuslims.com

22 sites linking in according to Alexa. Most of them good ones. That has to help.  dance

Cheesy Well that  will certainly get us some traffic. We'll be the hard core capital of the internet soon.

How does that work is it based on visitors, number of links or being hyper linked elsewhere.

Take the Pakman challenge and convince me there is a God and Mo was not a murdering, power hungry sex maniac.

I just did a few searches with surprising results, only to realize I was logged into Google and it personalized the search order (possibly based on past visits). While signed out, the term "ex muslim" searches ex-muslim.org.uk which I guess is good.

Google wont tell anyone the exact details of what search rankings are based on because if they told anyone then people would start playing the system.
Incoming links are good as long as they are legit. Link exchanges are pretty much useless if they are obviously contrived. Google is onto that trick. Meta keywords in the head of a page are virtually completely ignored these days as they are too easy to game. Frankly most of what is written about SEO is bollocks as far as I can tell.

I dont think it can be kept a secret, particularly as some of the experts who worked with google probably are now working as consultants for SEO companies - the only thing that they can probably hold back on is the weighting of these individual factors in the algorithm.  A bit like the coca-cola recipe.

Link exchanges were always pretty inflential until these link farms became abundant - now low page ranking sites have been rendered pretty much useless.  However ones from sites like the BBC make a difference.

Not sure how you came to this conclusion?

Yes I know links in from high-ranking sites are good. I didn't say otherwise. I was talking about "link farms" and other tricks when I said "obviously contrived" link exchanges are no good. For instance if you set up a site and have a bunch of friends set up sites on free hosting packages then all link to you it wont do you a bit of good. Google sometimes even craps on your ranking for stunts like that.

I also didn't say SEO is bollocks. You clipped the sentence and quoted it out of context. I said most of what is written about SEO is bollocks. You still get people saying meta keywords are important. They aren't. I've read all sorts of daft ideas that are supposed to help your rankings (forgotten most of them).

Yeah, google discovered these link farms were artificially increasing rankings so they started looking at the site rankings too. A lot of the SEO articles are bollocks, but thats true of pretty much anything when there is money to be made in a specialised business with low start up costs..

Yup. Exactly. People just write all sorts of rubbish and some others fall for it, then it becomes a meme.
