Hi everyone

I'm Maria and I'm not an ex-Muslim but I joined the CEMB last year sometime because I wanted to support the initiative. I publicise it frequently on my websites. I'm a Londoner with a half Greek, half English family background.

I've occasionally enjoyed reading this forum and have finally got to signing up. Nice to be here. I can't imagine many uses for this smiley but I love it so I'll use it in place of a friendly wave:

Welcome Skepticat - are you an agnostic/atheist yourself? How did you gain an interest in the cause?

Yes, I'm an atheist and a humanist. I used to be a full-time development officer with the British Humanist Association - in fact, my successor was Maryam Namazie.

I'm not sure if there was one particular thing that drew me in, it was more an accumulation of information from people like Maryam and certain books I read, like Ayaan's. I attended the first CEMB conference, the launch of the One Law for All Campaign and the demo in March as well as the CEMB AGM. Every event I've attended has strengthened my determination to be involved.

I am the creator of the ThinkHumanism.com website, by the way.

I might be interested too - what kind of age groups and activities are involved in the ones you know about? Are there any in the north-west of England?

Cool, a genuine activist! I'm excited to have you here, now that you laid out your cred for us. I know you're probably busy and spend most of your available internet time on your own website, but I'd be most happy to see you be a regular contributor here. As a woman of action I'm hoping we can have some good discussions and debates over organizational strategy and tactics (yes, I'm a sick, sick person and actually enjoy discussing such things outside of a work environment).

If you mean the events posted in the Positive Humanism section, no, they're not the main way humanists meet up. Humanist groups tend to either have their own websites (see the British Humanist Association website for links or other contact info) or they use facebook and yahoo meet up to publicise their events. The Positive Humanism forum is for anyone registered at TH to post news of any event or campaign they think might interest like-minded people so they tend to be a random selection of all kinds of things.

Humanist groups around the country typically attract mainly retired people who see the meetings as a pleasant social and educational opportunity with invited speakers on anything that might interest humanists. Philosphy, science, human rights issues are typical. The Central London Humanist group has broken the mould and has much younger members and a broader range of activities.
