  • Hey, all
     OP - October 25, 2009, 04:33 AM

It looks like a lot of people just make a new topic to introduce themselves, so here goes...

I'm Lauren, a 23-year-old American atheist. I'm a senior in college, majoring in English Literature. I almost had enough credits in religion classes to minor in Religious Studies, but I just don't have the time or money to take more electives outside my major. I have (some would say unhealthy) obsessions with music (mainly progressive rock, classic rock, and early metal) and stand-up comedy (my favorite comics being Bill Hicks and Lewis Black.) I wandered over to this site after an ex-Muslim friend of mine posted a link on Facebook. I'm mostly here because I'm in an ongoing conversation on FB with a Muslim man who is attempting to convert me, and I wanted to have somewhere I could come with questions. Seeing as I and most of my friends are more knowledgeable about Christianity than Islam, it seemed like a good idea to pop onto a site like this.

Should anyone care to know, my favorite bands include: Wishbone Ash, King Crimson, Budgie, The Who, Primus, Porcupine Tree, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Black Sabbath, and MANY more. If you listen to any of them (especially Wishbone Ash, King Crimson, or Budgie) I probably <3 you.

Hello Lauren, welcome aboard, i listen to a lot of music, most of it quite obscure but i do not listen to those bands (listen to the who though) as I do not know them. What I listened to also, was the Friday sermons in cairo on big microphones directed to the street, enticing violence straight out of islamic scripture.

Curious of course, which lines of dawa (invitation) did your nice muslim friend use.

"Ask the slave girl; she will tell you the truth.' So the Apostle called Burayra to ask her. Ali got up and gave her a violent beating first, saying, 'Tell the Apostle the truth.'"

Welcome Lauren, I'm just a little curious, but why is this guy trying to convert you, do you know him well? Hopefully you'll have all the answers to your questions on here  Wink

I stopped asking why a while back. I will put myself in his shoes and answer this one. She is an atheist, so to him clearly she has a spiritual vaccum that he can fill. Also she is a woman, which means she has another other vaccum that he thinks he must fill, specially that she is a western woman as well which is like bonus bonus bonus brownie points.

I'm an officer in the Atheist, Agnostic, and Non-Religious group on Facebook, which I assume is how he found me. We actually originally talked about music, as he seems to have a similar taste to me. We've been talking for several months now, and he seems to think that besides my atheism I'm quite a good person. I think it surprised him that I haven't been a d*ck to him haha. He's always saying that I am "right thinking" which is why he thinks he can convert me. I keep telling him that unless he has proof of a god existing (and specifically the god he worships), I won't be converting. And if he does have that proof, he'd better get it to some scientists, not me. Overall, though, Humra has probably got it right.

Looks like you found me!  Smiley You can always make a fake FB profile specifically for joining atheism-related groups. I know a lot of people who have done that. The group (AANR) tends to be a (somewhat insane) sanctuary for some. Last I knew we were the largest online group of atheists/agnostics.

Well the 70s was my era  Smiley

I like Wishbone Ash though tbh they were not the greatest prog rock band of the 70s but their album Argus was definitely a classic. (I saw them live at Cropredy festival a couple of years ago.)

Love this track - especially the guitar solo from 3:40

King Crimson were a great band band and 21st Cent Schizoid Man was a classic - but I love this track (QUOTE "Confusion will be my epitaph..." Oh man, that will be my epitaph too!):

Yeah, Argus is definitely my favorite Wishbone Ash album. If I had to pick a favorite track it'd be "Time Was," though I love all of them. It's just such an awesome album all around. It sounds epic and kickass, yet beautiful. It's a soundgasm every time! Tongue

And "Epitaph" is spectacular. I have trouble nailing down a King Crimson favorite--maybe "Elephant Talk" or "Dinosaur."

Not even gonna lie, Wishbone Ash is my favorite band. I've found it difficult to find a better one--though, of course, things like this are very subjective. And I'm insanely jealous that you got to see WA live. I wanted to go to Ash Fest 2010 in Florida, but unfortunately I'm a broke college student and could never afford it.

Yeah, Argus is a splendid album - but what about bands like Pink Floyd, Led Zep, Yes or Jethro Tull for example?

I think Wishbone Ash were just as good as those bands (who I also love.) For whatever reason, Wishbone Ash just didn't get as popular. I can't figure out why.

    Welcome LittleLauren.

My thoughts on King Crimson...well, let's just say my favorite cover of the Ramones' Commando was done by the Angry Samoans, and on the intro to the song from the "Live at Rhino Records" EP, they deadpanned sarcastically that they were dedicating the song to their "idols" of Pink Floyd and King Crimson, and I always found that hilarious.

Best I could do for a clip: http://www.amazon.com/gp/recsradio/radio/B000000P3N/ref=pd_krex_dp_001_003?ie=UTF8&track=003&disc=001

Yeah, I don't "get" prog rock, personally-- I always thought rock is at its best when simple, raw, and loud, with a few exceptions. But that's me.

    Again, welcome to the forum.

    fuck you

Haha well I obviously tend to like the more complicated stuff. Though I do enjoy, for example, NOFX, and they aren't complicated at all. But, I generally think rock is at its best when it's experimental, and combines influences from jazz, blues, and other genres.

So if I happen to be a Yankees fan (and not a bandwagon fan of any sort, I've been a Yankees fan since I started watching baseball when I was 8 years old) am I still welcomed to the forum? Tongue

If I want complicated, I listen to jazz or classical, I like my rock good and stupid. Smiley

You are certainly still welcome to the forum, but one of the forum rules is no supporting the Yankees. It is a bannable offense. Manat, however, openly defies this rule all the time with no consequence-- but she bribes Cheetah and BerberElla and shamelessly flirts with Osmanthus and Emerald, so she's protected.
