What does 2009 or 2010 actually means?  Huh?

Think about it, the whole world is using a calendar that is linked to an Ibrahimic religion which many scientists believe is false and imaginary. Just a thought! Now I wish for a new calendar for the world to follow!

Eh?   A calender is just an arbitrary thing, like a temperature scale.  This reminds me of an anecdote I once heard about a woman who said she believed in God because it was "too much of a coincidence" that water froze at 0 degrees and boiled at 100 degrees.   wacko   Cheesy

Why?  This one has served us quite well.  Should we change the names of the days of the week and the planets just because they are named after pagan gods?

Meh, large parts of Western culture is a form of secularised Christianity on which a lot of those customs are based off a mish-mash of pagan rituals.

Yes... we should. In the Islamic world we use a calendar about the Hijra (Exodus) of the prophet Muhamed from Mekka to Madina. I would not want to be reminded of how silly our ancestors were.

Now think about the date that reads: Friday, November 20th 2009 1, yeah 1, just 1.... that will be cool!

OK I am bored! Never mind me! Chilling

Go for it. Start your own calendar. That should keep you occupied. I suggest basing it on something illogical and obscure, like the orbital period of one of the newly discovered planets in other solar systems or something bonkers like that. Anything for maximum confusion.  grin12

Many people have been using the same Gregorian calendar (the one used most often in English speaking countries), but instead of "A.D."  and "B.C." which are abbreviations of specifically christian terms, many have been denoting those as "C.E." (current or common era) and "B.C.E." (before current/common era).

Yes but really that is just disguising the fact that it is still based on the birthday of a Jewish heretic. I mean we all know when the "Common Era" starts.  grin12

Yeah of course. It's quite ridiculous how much organized religion is shoved into everything.

I don't understand why this is an issue for you.  The calander is reliable and it works.  Who cares about what it is based on.

I don't think it is a problem if Muslim agnostics and atheists use the Islamic calander in their countries if they find it useful.

It's not just the calendar, yeah it's a trivial thing that we don't think about. It's also all the references to "God" just about everywhere, in most national anthems (American and Canadian ones for sure, I know that from personal experience), the constant references to "God" and religion in popular culture, movies, tv, politics, religious holidays, education, blah blah blah... everywhere you look, it's God this, God that. Like which God, whose God? It's annoying.

Well if it annoys that much why don't you take the word 'God' to mean anything you like?  Your beliefs, the cosmos, nature... anything.

In ours God is also asked to protect and bless our nation.  Doesn't bother me at all.  As long as they're not asking 'God' to punish unbelievers and hurt people then thats fine with me.

Yeah well it would be better for "average" people to stop waiting for God and start protecting and blessing their nations themselves. Most are waiting for God to validate their sense of self, stop climate change, save the "believers", create an apocalypse, bring heaven to earth/bring hell to earth, raise them to heaven, right all wrongs, let them have sex etc etc etc. Mythology is powerful stuff, it fuels our behaviour, our understanding and our response to the world, and this leaving everything to God business is a way to relieve ourselves of any responsibility to do the things we need to do to make ourselves better.

Definitely...  I should hope so.  Even during religous education I remember being taught that apparently 'god' helps people who help themselves..

But isn't that down to education and upbringing?  Will asking this 'god' (whatever god might be) to bless and protect a nation as it goes along, contribute to that?

Personally I do not know many people who leave everything to 'god' in the way you have described above.  And there are still quite a lot of believers here.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
I personally see no problem with the calender, it is even used by most Muslims countries. I would love though that the entire world stick to it, which they pretty much do except for a minority.

Yes it works fine but the origin of it just sad. I was kidding around when I suggested changing it... Oh no wait, no really use my birthday. After RIBS (AR) or Before RIBS (BR). I don't mind!
