  • The 'faith' of atheism
     OP - November 24, 2009, 07:15 PM

Since this trope was recently brought up by a theist on the forums, I thought of this old post from Greta Christina on the 'Atheists  have faith that there is no god' nonsense.

    What is faith?

Faith is Placing Trust on a set of unverifiable beliefs.

Do Atheists do this? ie Place Trust on a set of unverifiable beliefs?

I think most atheists will say no.

Because they are interested in evidence.

I thought you were a scientist, Lightrays?  You should know that it is impossible to prove a negative.  There can be an absence of evidence for something, (eg, God, jinns, unicorns), but not evidence of non-existence.

Atheism is an absence of belief. The one making the assertion needs to provide the evidence and the proof. So lightrays, you can't get out of this one. You believe that Allah exists, bring forth your evidence. Jazak-Allah. Afro

    Which god?

Could you verify that Ganesh doesn't exist? How about Zeus? Please provide evidence for why you believe they don't exist.

    Verification involves evidence.

There is no evidence for a God.

    There done.

So because there is no evidence they exist, you should believe in pink unicorns.  Cheesy

Like the reason many don't believe in unicorns, people don't believe in a god because there is nothing to suggest there is or needs to be a god. As for prooving a negative, thats logically impossible.

    Prove flying deer don't exist.

It is not the way you live your life that is important, it is how well you enjoy it that matters.

You can not ask people to provide a negative proof. 4 Billion people believe in something, then they have to prove it. They can not ask the other 2 billion to prove the negative for them.

Sh1t 6 Billion people can believe in something, they can not go ask the 1 guy on Earth that does not believe, to provide the proof.

I believe in astrology, you prove if it is real or not.
I believe in pink Unicorns, you prove it.
I believe that cars have horses under the hood. You prove me wrong.
I believe that I am wearing a white underwear, you prove me right.
I believe both my balls are the exact same size, prove me wrong.
I believe god exists, prove me right.

"Ask the slave girl; she will tell you the truth.' So the Apostle called Burayra to ask her. Ali got up and gave her a violent beating first, saying, 'Tell the Apostle the truth.'"
