    Hello fello infidels,

I am starting to feel that am just one of those people that does not feel a connection with spirituality....since i left islam i have tried studying most of these new age spiritual books, it actually started when i came across an author called Eckhart Tolle while watching Oprah, his books are mainly pepped up budhism (u know the usual live in the moment ..bla bla bla).....but i just dont feel it anymore ...it all sounds like bullshit to me...i guess my mind has just become too science focused to buy into spirituality...anyone feels the same....

That's because it is bullshit.  Anything you hear recommended on the Oprah Winfrey show is bull, end of.  This is the woman who gives air time to vaccination denialists, she's a smartened up, westernised version of the Imams who tell people the polio vaccine will make them impotent.  Ergo, she is full of shit.

You watch Oprah? Be careful, I heard that watching Oprah was the first sign of a brain tumor.

I'm not into spirituality, although I identify myself as a Zoroastrian, which is my father's religion. I like the culture, the ethics & the values which contemporary Zoroastrianism provides, I don't believe in God & don't feel any need for anything spiritual.

I never even felt the spiritual connection while being a Muslim. What kept me there was the scaremongering techniques of Islam.
I don't think I'll ever bother about spirituality. If I want to relax and free my mind I lie down and listen to some baroque music and it does the job.  Afro

I certainly didn't feel any spiritual connection and even whilst praying could hear myself ask if I was wasting my time.

Music makes me feel spiritual. Certain occasions like the birth of a child in my family make me feel spiritual too. Pleasent, benign, communal manifestations and rituals of non-bigoted religion can make me feel spiritual too, even though I am an observer and not a direct participant (funnily enough the ones that move me the most often involve music)

Did you ever feel any spiritual connection while making Dua? What things in your life as a Muslim did you every experience spirituality?

+1. I practice Zen Buddhism, which helps me calm down, and relax my mind. In my perspective, that's the definition of spirituality.

I got more spiritual connection from watching a carl sagan episode than the attending of several churches. On xmas and easter I also get a spiritual connection, mainly because i get to see people i like, but rarely get to meet the rest of the year.

I think I made one absolutely sincere dua about seven years ago, which at the time I felt was answered. It could have gone one way or the other. It was about my marriage so was a very earthly dispute. My wife had to ask a Mufti for a fatwa on something and the odds fell in our favour. I did feel at the time that my dua was answered, but maybe there were other contingencies involved?

I get an amazing feeling of wonderment & humility, I certainly would not call it anything like a  'spirtual connection'

I thought so but perhaps Jack can explain, as he has talked in the past about spirts or spiritual connections and appears to be the most defensive about them.

    What is spirituality?

I think it is the stirring of feelings of awe, of a feeling of the sublime, something transcendent within you -- feelings of being connected to something larger than yourself, a temporary state of hyper-sensitivity to an emotion of universal union of some kind.

That sounds immense - but strangely enough, spiritual feelings can be gentle, small-scale emotion, as well as larger kinds of loss-of-self.

Someone is going to have to figure out what spiritual means first.
I think the Universe is cool and full of mysteries to be explored. I have emotions, at times I can be introspective and I have an imagination....
That's just being a human with a functioning brain. I dont know if that is 'spiritual' or not. I guess not, as there are no spirits involved, and I dont see any reason to bring make believe metaphysics into it or fairy tale characters.

The foundation of superstition is ignorance, the
superstructure is faith and the dome is a vain hope. Superstition
is the child of ignorance and the mother of misery.

If you are interested in reading about "atheist spirituality" I would recommend the following book:

The book of atheist spirituality - an elegant argument for spirituality without God

    Author: Andre Comte-Sponville

It is an absolutely superb book! It starts with askinf if we can do without God, and then moves on to prove that God does not exist. Finally, the case is made for atheist spirituality.
