     OP - December 14, 2009, 02:45 PM

What would our world look like today? How would it be different?

What do you think?  For starters Chinese people might not look like Chinese people, if Dr Alice Roberts is to be believed.

They wouldn't be black, but they wouldn't be as white. Probably the same color as the italians. I'm not an expert mind you, but I think the most common theory is that pale skin was a result of some humans becoming trapped in the ice sheets of europe and northern asia and natural selection pressures against darker skinned people led to lowering of the pigmentation to absorb more sunlight. Not 100% sure, but I think it's something like that.

I think I worded that wrong. I don't mean physically trapped. But as in populations of humans because isolated and in various parts of ice age Europe and northern Asia. I read this somewhere but i still think it's a debated issue on how north european features arose. But the common denominater is the experience of the ice age.

When you get up to Dr ALice Roberts European episode on the evolution of man, she goes into it.  From what i remember darker skins was beneficial for one type of synthesis in the sun but detrimental to another (think it was vitamin D).

As the climates changed and there was little sun anyway, this exchange was no longer productive so skins became paler..

But I thought she said nobody really knows how they got their facial traits?

Yeah, there is no evidence asiatic features are linked to the ice age or habitation in the north.

Fact is a lot of human features are a result of sexual selection instead of natural selection. Meaning certain traits are considered attractive and thus preferred and propagated in a segment of humanity. Blue eyes, and straight hair are good examples.

Good point e.g. West Indians better than average physical build may have been a result of the same phenomenon..

Its difficult to prove anything like this, so all theories will always be based on conjecture..

That's interesting. My next question was going to be "why did white skin evolve", because I could not think of how white skin could be evolutionarily advantageous, but you have just answered that!
