  • If you could go back in time
     OP - December 16, 2009, 09:45 PM

That is a fair point IsLame. I haven't really understood Wittgenstein and his assertion that logic needs to be prefaced with language (!). At what stage does dogma become non-dogmatic?

When your brain is being used by your ears to listen & understand, and not to concoct your next argument

Certainlly in my own past I was deaf, dumb and blind (to quote the Quranic verse) to anything that was anti-Islamic. If I could go back in time and argue with my former self, I would not have been very successful.

Interesting point - if we could do a Marty McFly, and argue with ourselves when we were Muslims, would we win?

My guess is that with an unlimited amount of time the majority of us would vote Yes.  Be interesting to start a poll on it, so here goes..

I know that if the me of now could go back and argue with the me of then, the me of now would win b/c the me of now can educate the me of then about shariah, fard al ayn, etc. as well as Islamic history and explain the things that I was uncomfortable with and was told 'That's just because you haven't studied enough yet.'

Absolutely, the me of now could win against the me of then in a matter of hours, I'm sure of it.

If someone had told me the things I know now, back then, it would have made immediate sense to me, but no one ever did.

I really wish I could go back in time.  Tongue

Cripes, if you've got a time machine, I'd go back and wipe out the towns of Mecca and Medina to ensure that no Islam never arises out of Arabia.

Yeah, probably. Because me being loyal to Islam was very much related to being ignorant of Islam. So all I'd need to do is tell myself to go read the hadiths and point out some good Nietchze books and I'd be on my way.

If I had a time machine, I would want to go to 610 on the night when Muhammad receives wahy from Jibreel. I would want to see what actually happened. What REALLY went on in that tiny cave.

I wouldn't, I needed it at the time, and I'm glad of all the experience I got and everything I learned.

I chose to get circumcised at 17, don't tell me I never believed.

Yeah, if I had known then what I know now, I would have apostated. OTOH I lived in Saudi a few years ago and its probably better that I  did it in Canada than there.

Its a good thing you left Islam in Canada. If this was in Saudi Arabia, they would take your head. But you are in Canada so no worries Afro

I would have stood at the bottom of the mountain. And went: "Jump Jump Jump.."

I definitely would have convinced myself in probably just an hour or two. All my life I was looking for an excuse to leave this bull-crap, but it was ingrained so deeply in me that i wasn't willing to leave until it was 'absolutely 100% proved' that I wasn't going to burn in hell for that. And the proof came when I researched human evolution from primates . If i told my 10-11 year self about this, he would literally quit on the spot yes

I'd like to believe that me of now will win. But I am not entirely sure. Maybe it depends on the time I go back to.
