yup, twas the egg because what laid it was not technically a chicken (think of it in terms of mutations).

From the info it seems like a red junglefowl and a grey junglefowl mated and the female laid the egg which gave birth to the first chicken.. correct me if i'm wrong.

Given that birds evolved from theropods I think it is safe to say that eggs came first.
