  • Hi :)
     OP - December 28, 2009, 01:29 AM

Posted a few times on this forum before, thought I'd write a quick introduction.
Gave up Islam about a year and a half ago, I'm eighteen now. I come from a fairly strict Bangladeshi Muslim family. I'm still 'in the closet' about my apostasy, but occasionally I'll slip up and say something that makes my parents give me funny looks. That's probably why I just found out my mum's signed me up for an Aqeedah course.  Grin
I can't pinpoint a specific moment when I decided I wouldn't follow Islam any more. It was a gradual process and I remember trying to hold onto it for a while, did lots of research and then found that it really didn't make any sense to me at all.
That's all I can think of typing right now - hope to post more here in future.

Hi Saima. My parents used to give me funny looks all the time. Had nothing to do with religion though. They just thought I was bonkers.

    Cheesy

Ah, and welcome Saima... Look at the Aquida course this way: it is a free stand up comedy that was not funny before your apostasy. For me, hearing any Mullah talking, is hilarious.  Afro

Yesterday on the radio, a mullah was telling the story of the palm tree that cried because Mo stoped preaching under it. He said everybody heard it's cry untill the prophet went back to the tree and gave it a hug.

WTF? If that really happened, who needs Quran miracle then? If that really happened, all qurayesh would have followed Mohamed.

    That was hilarious : D

    Hi everyone!  dance

I found out about this site from discussislam's channel on YouTube - love his videos.

I can't remember all of the events that led to my apostasy, but one of the things that triggered it was an argument I had with a super-strict Muslim uncle. I'd chosen to do Art at school and was really into it, he said that it was haram and that I shouldn't have picked it.  finmad He then got to lecturing a cousin about what she was wearing, and I remember feeling really mad that there were all of these rules on every single aspect of our lives. (Like how to dress, the length of your beard, what foot to use when stepping out the door, restrictions on what you're allowed to do in school...) It just seemed ridiculous and pointless.

It wasn't just that, I'd always had difficulty accepting Islamic views on women and non-believers. I also remember what I felt like the first time I ever learned about God from my parents, it was just confusing. (When my parents told me he was everywhere, I actually believed for a while that God must have a trillion invisible clones running around taking care of everything.) And you're supposed to love AND fear him at the same time? I never really got that.

Another thing that probably led to it was the lack of satisfying answers to my questions, even from the 'experts'. A common response I got was "Only Allah knows why." Some answers that I did get were just silly. When I once asked my mum why women in Islam have to cover up so much more than men, she replied with "Because men are stupid."  Huh?

Cheesy I remember that. Reminded me of the story about Moses and the stone running away with his clothes.

    Hello welcome :-)

My advise would be keep your loss of faith to yourself for now...live with it...allow yourself to grow with it...until you are ready to tell your family....and even then if need to...

For me loss of faith should be a private thing...there is no need to involve the family...

    just my opinon...

Rubaiyat, if your family's religion is affecting you in a negative way then loss of faith is NOT a personal thing at all. Also if one does not feel right in living a lie then they should not have to hide it. There's nothing personal about losing your faith, it can change everything.

We all tell lies. These lies protect us from the harshness of the world, from our own inadequacies...from our own frailties.

We tell children fairy stories to shield them from truth of reality. We do this not out of spite but out of compassion because children are not ready or developed enough to engage with the harshness of the world...we prepare them slowly...over many years.

It is very personal. Faith has always been a personal thing. Faith is an individual accent to set of beliefs. It's one's relationship with the God. It has nothing to do with anyone else.

You missed my point completely. Faith is not personal if it is affecting you or others in a negative way. This forum wouldn't exist if faith was kept personal. We shouldn't have to follow silly rules just because our parents believe in a fairy in the sky.

And not all lies protect you from the harshness of the world, some ground you deeper in to it. Not everybody can live with pretending to be a muslim.

why does faith hold this special personal position for you?  You dont mind being open about your favourite movie, your favourite jam, you favourite type of music, you favourite book, but your faith cannot be discussed openly (although you can do it here)?

My guess its not what you claim, but just because you are afraid of the consequences, but please feel free to correct me..
