Man, fuck all that noise. I don't wanna hear it. No way am I gonna shell out my money to watch that overhyped Dances With Wolves in space nonsense. I ain't watchin that shit on principle. I don't care if the purchase of a theater ticket comes with a coupon for a free blowjob from Kim Kardashian, I ain't goin to see it. I'm goin to see The White Ribbon.

Okay, well, on further reflection if there is a coupon for a free blowjob from a hot chick I may consider going.

    fuck you

Saw the movie yesterday in IMAX3D and my eyes did orgasm; visually the movie is absolutely stunning. The 3D feels like it's an organic part of the movie rather than just a gimmick.

But the story is a different matter altogether - it's utterly simplistic. The movie is basically a wet dream of a 15 year old Wiccan hippie girl who just discovered that EEEVIL corporations create wars, pollution and trample pretty flowers and such for profit. I mean talk about cliches; the bad guys were really chaos like evil and the good guys were so sweet and "spiritual" and nice that I nearly got diabetes. The references to the Iraqi war, War against TerrorTM and to the near extermination of Native Americans and their culture were pretty obvious and I couldn't help but see this movie as a sort of an indicator of the man-made-global-warming pangean eco-hysteria we are currently witnessing.

Anyway The Nature is the most important thing ever and being a "savage" with spirituality is way better than anything that science, reason and progress can achieve. Therefore abandon consumerism while you still can, return to the caves and rediscover the spiritual bond with nature.

The movie is Pacahontas with aliens in it. Watch it with 3D or IMAX, but don't watch it for the actual 'movie'. The story is nothing new and at least Pokeahotass had a hot cartoon in it that i would poke.

Yeah,  the story is definitely basic Pocahontas, Dances with Wolves, Last Samurai etc. And yeah it had obvious greenish, paganish, corny message in it. But I frankly liked all that. I liked that the good guys won and it was morally clear who were the baddies and who were not. We've been going through a lot of these artsy, complex social message movies lately and I enjoyed this visual epic that really took old and classic story formulas and basically pumped it with steroids. This movie was escapism at it's finest, every fucking second of it was a work of art.

And to those ripping it and watching it on their comps... you're missing out big time. If there is one movie that you should spend money on to see in the theaters this one would be it!

Is it still going to be in theaters after 3 Jan? (CBA to Google)

Yep. Considering Mr Cameron spent $300,000,000 on it, they're gonna keep it in theatres for a while.

The Avatar is not about a original story. The story in itself is nothing ground breaking. It is nothing like Matrix story.

This is about the demonstration of a technology which removes all limitations of existing movie making techniques. It is the blending of the real and the fantasy in which you are freed from all constraints of what you can create on the screen.

Didn't you find the pantheistic spiritual parts abit kind of hippy and vague? For someone as sceptical as you I'm surprised. I mean, I'm quite romantic about pantheism and all that kind of hippy shit but even I groaned at the cheesiness of some of it.

I *loved* the cheesy pantheistic, and pocahantos bullshit. That movie took that shit and made it fucking sexy. Yes I'm skeptical and generally negative.. which is precisely why I loved it.. its pure escapism and so unlike me.

Fuck plot. To me a *real* movie about the magic and wonder. Artsy and smarty pants movie are great for a DVD, but Avatar was made for the big screen.

If I wanted depth and meaning I'd read a fucking book. Oscars should award movies that are grand, epic, and advance the art of making movies. Not just good stories.

As far as I am concerned the movie fell apart at the moment when Jake Sully was transferred into avatar body for the first time and started rampaging around disobeying a direct order from a superior officer. As a total liability he should have been thrown in a brig and transported home on the next shuttle awaiting court martial.
Instead he was allowed to partake and play a central part in a most delicate operation.

You guys know what Mary Sue is in fiction? Jake Sully is the ultimate one. And I very much dislike when I am “forced” into liking the main character.

Furthermore when Vasquez disobeyed a direct order to shoot at the Na’vi village she wasn’t shot on the spot for mutiny. No, she was allowed to freely walk around the base and consequently help Jake escape.
Apart from Sigourney Weaver there practically wasn’t a single character in the whole story one could relate to. Furthermore, the portrait of idyllic blue Aboriginal makes us completely blind to their own oppressive hierarchy, which certainly must exist – they do have a princess after all.

What Avatar does fantastically though is to provide a fast food quasi religious, quasi environmental and quasi spiritual experience.
