     OP - January 12, 2010, 04:14 PM

    Quote

When Bradford schoolgirl Ambreen Sadiq steps into the boxing ring, she is not just fighting her opponent but battling against some cultural disapproval as well.

As a Muslim, the 14-year-old’s sporting attire of shorts and a vest is contrary to the strict teachings of her religion.

But the Belle Vue Girls’ School pupil is determined that any controversy will not get in the way of her ambition to box for England.

With her Portuguese mum, Carla da Silva, and her dad, Shokit Ali Sadiq, who are both Muslim, fully in support, she is already on her way.

Ambreen recently won ‘fighter of the night’ at a contest and also beat an Amateur Boxing Association finalist in a sparring match.

Naz Jalil, her coach at Eastburn Boxing Club, near Keighley – where Jessica Wilson, 16, of Silsden, also trains – has entered her for the ABA national championships in May, which could lead to selection for England.

Her mum acknowledged there had been some opposition to her daughter taking up the sport.

“We know there is a lot of talk and she is doing this against the odds and she will have a hard time, but we are fully behind her,” she said.

“We are very proud of her. Her dream is to become a professional boxer. It’s a big dream but not impossible.”

Mr Jalil said: “I don’t know of any other boxing gym having an Asian girl competing. It’s definitely a no-go for girls from that background.”

There were other issues Ambreen faced at some of the venues, such as working men’s clubs and some pubs, he said.

Ambreen, who lives in Eastburn and has three sisters and a brother, also plays football, basketball and badminton.

She said of boxing: “Sometimes if I tell Asian people they ask what I wear. When I say shorts and a vest they can’t believe it. People have been shocked but only a very small number have been against it.”

Sher Azam, of Bradford Council for Mosques, said: “Islam does not prohibit taking part in sport. The only things it requires are a dress code for both men and women. They should not expose the parts of their body which attract the opposite sex.

“I am pleased she is doing well.”

Okay, that's one fatwa based on hadith, but was Mo talkin about boxing as a sport or just beatin the fuck out of someone in a street fight? If there's nothing that specifies which it is, it certainly seems like something open to interpretation by various jurists.

Look he banned chess, alchohol and music too.  Anything that takes you away from your dean and stops you reflecting on his utter awesomeness is a no-no.

Yeah, but he didn't ban sport. And that's the point-- how do you know Mo was referring to pugilistic sport and not just two dudes getting pissed off at each other and exchanging blows?

I always considered chess to be the weird one.

No, I dont think he did.  I think he just didnt people hitting each other in the face, so technically its wrong but its not banned.

I thought it's because of that vague verse in the Quran, do not destroy yourselves (its sometimes translated or interpreted as do not harm yourself) The one that I thought prohibited suicide. The only that people mention when saying tatoos is bad. Boxing is a rough sport (I have always liked it though) so being a professional fighter = harmful.

However, its funny how Shia Muslims will say boxing fights are haram but beat themselves on Ashura.  There is even a tradition of a kid that wanted to join battles, his parents were not muslim and did not approve so Mo said no. He was like 13 or 15. Anyways, in one of the Battles where Mo got harmed and lost his teeth, tooth (I guess the protective Angels were busy getting celestial slushies or something) at the news of this the kid pulled his two of his front teeth, lower ones. He was sad :( Not only did nobody stop him when he did this, but Mo said it was a good thing. It's out of this tradition (from what I've been told) that shia Muslims say its ok to harm yourself, if done for the right reason and is not life-endangering or permanent (I guess teeth can always grow back if you pray hard enough).

It's weird though because Karate seems to be OK, contests I mean, so is Greco-Roman wrestling and I think BJJ. All of these can be harmful, even during regular sparring. Plus there are Karate forms close to Muay Thai, so what the hell?
Even weirder, Iran partook in the Boxing fights during the last Olympics.

This is the problem with having laws etched in stone (or rather leafs, stones and bones) 1400 years ago. We evolve, life evolves, but the laws remain the same. Fucking retarded.

I guess at the end of the day, a woman is a woman, and in Islam you just don't have that many options. Men just have more leeway.

I'm glad to see she is getting so much support from her parents.

It's quite telling though that the first think Muslims ask her about her boxing is what she wears!  Shouldn't they be more concerned about her getting seriously injured in the ring than what she's wearing?

Not true. Bareback blowjobs are most definitely haraam if performed between members of the same sex.

Oh, wait-- I thought you wrote BBBJ. Now I see its BJJ, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. That makes more sense. BJJ is halal as it doesn't involve any gay stuff...

    ROTFL!!!!

I know hey, I like BJJ as much as the next guy (that just doesn't sound right) but seriously, it's hella gay at times.

Q-Man, you think BJJ and wrestling is any good in fights? A lot of wrestlers seem to kick the ass of the regular Joe, even those that are good with their knuckles. It takes one sweep and you are pretty much fucked if you can't handle yourself on the ground.

Not sure. Never trained in it and it's not like I know a whole hell of a lot about street fighting or martial arts. Certainly seems like it has the potential to be effective in street fights, but like any other martial art, the level of effectiveness with depend to a large degree on the natural talent/instincts of the person using it and/or the level and type of training they receive, and what kind of threat they're up against.

The general rule of thumb in fighting outside of a ring is to strike first and strike hard, and not give a fuck how bad you hurt the other person. 90% of fights I've seen or participated in, the person who struck first won. This is why the meanest fucks normally win fights, not that they're more experienced at fighting or stronger or faster-- they just don't give a fuck. I've learned over the years that if you sense a physical altercation is imminent, the best thing to do is walk away (but if you got a weapon, keep your hand on it). You don't strike first, you stand a good chance of going down. You do strike first, you stand a good chance of catching an assault and battery charge or worse.

Take it from someone who's been arrested four times, stabbed twice, had his ribs cracked, his jaw shattered, guns pulled on him twice, tear gassed, clubbed, and tasered. Avoiding physical confrontation is best, and when you're not acting like a childish, reckless, self-destructive asshole, it's actually much easier to avoid fights than you ever imagined before! Wink

But if you did want to train in a martial art for self-defense, ideally I think you'd want a combo of Muay Thai (which teaches you how to take and give fist and leg strikes standing up) and BJJ or Sambo (for grappling, joint locks, throws and groundwork), with some training in Krav Maga or Combat Hapkido. If you have a limited amount of time to train, I'd pick Krav or Combat Hapkido for pure self-defense purposes. Those are pretty much designed to handle real life self-defense situations with a minimal amount of training or even athletic ability. But the most important thing is to commit to the training-- which is exactly why I don't do it. I know I'm not gonna commit to the regular training required to make it worthwhile.

If you want one for fun and to stay in shape-- go for Muay Thai or some other kind of kickboxing. Fun, great workout, and has practical application.

    fuck you

    @Q-Man

Thanks! I'm not into violence in any way, it repulses me. But as a sport I find it thrilling. Not sure about MMA, I think they let the fights go on too long sometimes, and the crowd cries for blood anytime there is a stand still. But Boxing and Muay Thai are beautiful. I realize that my entire post is still contradictory but I'm just being honest.

Yeah, when UFC first came out I was maybe 15 or so, so of course I thought it was awesome, though I didn't get to watch it much as we didn't have cable at the time, so no PPV. I kinda rediscovered it when I was on assignment in the Midwest over the summer. It's fun to watch and all, but, yeah, I know what you mean. And it's not as exciting as when it first came out and was less a professional sport and more (to quote John McCain) human cockfighting-- and when you're a teenage boy, that's a good thing of course.

I prefer boxing, particularly the lower weight classes. Philly's a big boxing city. Still don't have cable, so PPV at home is out. Have to go to a friend's or a bar to watch fights, though I don't watch them too often. Used to watch Tecate Solo Boxeo on the Spanish channel on Friday nights, but unfortunately they canceled it a couple of years ago.

You see any of the Ward v. Gatti (RIP) trilogy? Awesome, awesome shit. My favorite fights ever. What a wonderful rivalry-- no hate, all respect, but those guys were tough as nails and beat the shit outta each other all the same. Though you can't help but feel a bit guilty watching that shit, as exciting as it is-- you know eventually the beatings that Ward took are gonna have an effect on his brain. Well, at least I hope not-- Ward's a bruiser but he's also a sweetheart, humble as fuck, and he had to lose his friend Gatti way too early already.

    fuck you

To be honest, I can't see it catching on. This is a skill that every woman should know, some more than others. Can you imagine what it would be like if every Muslim teenage girl or young woman knew how to throw a punch and knock out a fella trying to tell her what to do?

I used to feel way guilty watching boxing and so on when I was a muslim. Which I think sucked because I kept thinking it's up to them, these are professional fighters and they know what they're getting into. I would have loved to have a fight or two in boxing or muay, but I'm lazy as well so I stopped going anytime I started a sport like that haha

I will check those out, I'm waiting for the Mayweather/ Pacquiao. Pacquiao is incredible.

I like watching Tyson's early fights, I think he is technically underrated, he's pretty damn quick and graceful in the ring. I mean graceful in moving around not behavior haha. It seems Tyson was way more humble and sane before Don King.

If I believed in prayer I'd pray for this to happen. Shit I'm pretty sure I'll try to persuade my kids to get into self-defense, especially my daughter. No fucking man is pulling a 4:34 on her. LOL I imagine her growing up tattooing 4:34 on her knuckles and dishing out a nice hot serving of whoop-ass anytime a man tries something stupid Cheesy

btw girl fighters in muay thai shorts, fucking hot.

Sheeee-it...you don't want none of this fool. I took down both the Klitschko brothers at the same time with both hands tied behind my back, by bludgeoning them with my cock...and I didn't even unzip my pants.

In all seriousness, I got a metal plate and pins holding the left side of my jaw together from when someone shattered it with a pipe 12 years ago, and seein as I don't feel like tryin to eat pussy through a straw for the next 4 months, I'll take a pass.

Ever had your jaw wired shut? It sucks a gigantic donkey dick. The pain ain't even the worst part of it. It's just an enormous pain in the ass. Can't get to first base with a girl, gotta eat nothing but milkshakes and blended and strained soup/veggies, etc. through a fuckin straw. Then when you get the wire off you buy a big ass pastrami sandwich not realizing that your jaw muscles have so atrophied that you can't open your mouth wide enough to eat it, and you actually have to learn to chew again. You work your way up, but even after a couple of months when you've nearly gotten back to normal, you still can't eat pizza without the cheese goin all over your chin, and even once you got full use back, for years afterwards you run the risk of getting a "charley-horse" everytime you yawn. I still get it every now and then.

No fun. So, yeah-- I'll pass. You and BlackDog can battle it out.

    fuck you
