  • Avatar fans struck with depression amid racist message!
     OP - January 14, 2010, 09:32 AM

So some fans are now claiming that watching avatar has led to depression for them:

    Quote
Despite the $1 billion made in ticket sales over the past three weeks since the film's release, controversy also surrounds its ability to depress the audience.

Internet forums are also filled with fans saying they've become depressed after realising their life doesn't live up to the utopian alien world of Pandora.

CNN reported one fan site received 1,000 posts titled 'Ways to cope with the depression of the dream of Pandora being intangible'.

Not only that, but that the message of Avatar was inherently racist:

    Quote
Blogs have flooded the internet, suggesting it has racist undertones relating to the relationship between the Alien tribe and disabled Marine.

A columnist for the New York Times, David Brooks, agrees and has said: "Avatar is a racial fantasy par excellence….

"It rests on the stereotype that white people are rationalist and technocratic while colonial victims are spiritual and athletic.

"It rests on the assumption that non-whites need the White Messiah to lead their crusades.  It rests on the assumption that illiteracy is the path to grace.

"It also creates a sort of two-edged cultural imperialism.  Natives can either have their history shaped by cruel imperialists or benevolent ones, but either way, they are going to be supporting actors in our journey to self-admiration", he continued.

The racism angle given more explanation here

    Quote
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Near the end of the hit film "Avatar," the villain snarls at the hero, "How does it feel to betray your own race?" Both men are white — although the hero is inhabiting a blue-skinned, 9-foot-tall, long-tailed alien.

Strange as it may seem for a film that pits greedy, immoral humans against noble denizens of a faraway moon, "Avatar" is being criticized by a small but vocal group of people who allege it contains racist themes — the white hero once again saving the primitive natives.

    Quote
Since the film opened to widespread critical acclaim three weeks ago, hundreds of blog posts, newspaper articles, tweets and YouTube videos have said things such as the film is "a fantasy about race told from the point of view of white people" and that it reinforces "the white Messiah fable."

    Quote
Like Kevin Costner in "Dances with Wolves" and Tom Cruise in "The Last Samurai" or as far back as Jimmy Stewart in the 1950 Western "Broken Arrow," Sully soon switches sides. He falls in love with the Na'vi princess and leads the bird-riding, bow-and-arrow-shooting aliens to victory over the white men's spaceships and mega-robots.

Adding to the racial dynamic is that the main Na'vi characters are played by actors of color, led by a Dominican, Zoe Saldana, as the princess. The film also is an obvious metaphor for how European settlers in America wiped out the Indians.

Now based on the blogs and snippets I am reading, I can see the whole racism subtext, if not intentional, does exist, not just in this movie, but in quite a few movies.

I stilll don't see where the depression is coming from.

I totally loved this movie, and I am about as Emo as you can get without being a self harmer lol I found this story to be pure escapism.  Yes, our planet will never be like Pandora, there is no utopian ideal, but it doesn't take this movie to make me see that, life has driven home that sharp lesson.

    What do you think?

Inhale the good shit, exhale the bullshit.

The White Man Burden is a theme found in a lot of films. It has started to wind down, but we are still far from seeing strong non-white protagonists working in a humane manner and not with some racial agenda. As in Black Man helping White Man because Black Man needs to teach White Man lesson.

Race is a huge issue in America, movies reflect these issues and prejudices. One day we will see Human help Human, for the sake of helping another human being. Nobody being noble and shit, and nobody being a wreck, but both having these aspects, and both helping each other. But we are not there yet.

However, I did not see it that in this film. Surely there is a question of race, but I thought that in this film that was more about the ideas and values you hold. There were several non-white marines, and non-white scientists. How do they explain that? Fucking insipid critique.

I saw this guy not in white terms (maybe that's just me) but in terms of a Marine, wanting to fit in, doing what's right for the army. In the second part he's doing what he thinks for the people. I never thought of him as white, I drew parallels to the European conquest of Native Americans but how the hell could you not, they even had whoops and yelps to mimic the battle cries of Native Americans (not sure they actually do this in real life, again, this is something seen in American Western films) to make sure you don?t miss the point.

I thought it was a humane film, with a beautiful message.

Whilst I was watching the movie I wasn't even aware of the white man saving the blue people theme, to me it was just a human helping others, the characters skin colour was irrelevant to me.

I am sensitive to racism, but outright racism, intentional racism, am I not picking up on subtle racism?

I watched I am legend for instance, in which the main saviour is a black man, and again didn't even see skin colour, it was just a lone man.

I think you have a much different background and life experience than most "emos", which gives you a grounding in reality they don't. The fewer real material problems/struggles one has had in life, the more one is likely to be neurotic or get upset over abstractions. Plus a lot of them are teenagers, who generally tend to have a whole "woe-is-me, woe-to-the-world" mentality over piddly shit.

    fuck you

Omg.. Are these people totally fucked in the head? I don't even know where to start. Honestly, the only real response I can think of is "go fuck yourself emo". Its a friggin movie.

About the racism thing.. yeah of course its part of the white messiah complex. Its part of white culture, its a movie made by a white person. What the fuck do they expect? A brown messiah? Seriously, white people like white hero, movie made by white person for largely white market. Okay, moving on.

And anyways, as movies with that story go Avatar is the least worst offender.  At least there's black and white humans on one side and aliens on the other, whereas with Pocahontas, Dances With Wolves, etc it was overtly one race against another.

Well, yeah, but the fact it was "one race against another" in Dances With Wolves (haven't seen Pocahontas) was just reflecting the historical reality.

    fuck you

Pocahontas and Dances With Wolves, (and Avatar), are all the same story with the names of the characters changed.  But its not the one race against another part that people see as racist, its the noble savages led by the cool white guy they're complaining about and in that respect Avatar is less racist than the others.

Do actual non-white people complain about racism on these kind of non-issues? I've never met a brown person who bitched about this stuff. I watched avatar with a bunch of brown people, no one noticed "white hero" or whatever we loved the fucking movie. Heck, James Cameron could join the fucking KKK and declare Avatar to be a metaphor about the endagered white race and I'd still pay to see this movie again.  Cheesy

I think it says alot about the people who are making the racial critiques... You'd have to be quite sensitive to the issue to see it as THAT prevalent in the film. Either you're obsessed with race or have some underlying guilt embedded in you to make such a big deal of it. Its a fucking movie. Yes, art/entertainment always involve some social commentary, but not every film is a vessel of racial propaganda.

Not only that, but that the message of Avatar was inherently racist...

Wtf? The whole point of the movie was that Jake transcended "his" species and transformed himself into another. You know "You are who you choose to be" type of thing.

Whilst I was watching the movie I wasn't even aware of the white man saving the blue people theme, to me it was just a human helping others, the characters skin colour was irrelevant to me.

The characters skin colour was white at the beginning white or blue in the middle and at the end blue only.

and I am about as Emo as you can get without being a self harmer

Huh? You are an Emo? As far as I know you have ditched an abusive husband, reorganized your life and you are doing a fine job raising your children on your own. That is pretty much hardcore badass in my book. As far away from Emo as it gets tbh.

    emo
A group of white, mostly middle-class well-off kids who find imperfections in there life and create a ridiculous, depressing melodrama around each one. They often take anti-depressants, even though the majority don't need them. They need to wake up and deal with life like everyone else instead of wallowing in their imaginary quagmire of torment.
    Emo conversation!
