  • The nun analogy
     OP - February 03, 2010, 12:01 PM

I was watching Zakir Naik on Peace TV the other day and he was talking about "double standards"! Anyway, he mentioned the same tired old "nun" analogy again.

Isn't the nun analogy so ridiculously stupid?!

Insanely, Islamists consider women to be vaginas and child-bearers/cooks. Nothing more

Nuns are the polar opposite, Nuns are independent from the world and worldly bondage (marriage) and are completely spiritual in nature rather than just being physical vessals.

Anyway, there are about 800 million Muslim women and less than a million nuns, so it doesn't work.

I hear what you're saying. You're spinning my head around.

"A Muslim women wears a hijab and covers up, and they say that she is oppressed. A Christian nun dresses the same, and she is a pious woman. Is that not a double standard?!"

Of course it isn't! A nun chooses to go into that order. Secondly, it is a uniform; nobody would say that a nun is a whore if she doesn't dress like that.

It is a great trick to use though.  For awhile, as a young teen it baffled me for sure.  So if it works, and it does, they will continue to use it.

Along with the diamond one, always a good one to use on the young and impressionable.

You know, the one about why virginity is precious, because just the other most precious thing in the world, diamonds, are deep deep down and need to be mined out with hard work, so to should the virginity, be hard work to get to.

Logic 101 should be mandatory for every person on earth, its pathetic that people can be swayed by arguments like this.

Lol, that is even stupider than the nun analogy. When you said "diamond", I thought you meant the one about why a woman has to be covered up is because "if you had a precious diamond, you would want it to be covered up and noone else to see it apart from you" - another stupid analogy.

Do nuns have to dress like that? Or is it just an option?

They do have to dress like that but it is a uniform of the specific order.

Yeah, I've heard it that way too.  Stupid, maybe, but it works on many.  I've seen it working on white female converts.   yes

I suppose this assumes that there is something inherently precious about virginity?

Why do people make this assumption?

Personally as far as sex is concerned I would prefer a fire-breathing whore over a virgin (especially in heaven).

Besides, thats actually a more of a justification for wearing a nice hat. Hijab would be like building a nice house and then covering with giant ugly black tarp.

Isn't bein a nun a very specific calling anyways? Like they are part of some order and live in a convent right? How is that remotely comparable to rank-and-file imposition of hijab on normal muslims. Its not like there are any normal christians that are required to dress like a nun.

Well the "uniform" that some nuns and monks have is generally worn whilst at the convent, and can be worn outside, but the local order near me the nuns wear normal clothes when out in the town.

Ok well first of all, nuns of the modern age, not all of them have to cover from face to toe like these islamists claim.
They were allowed to show their face and hands which the islamists don't approve of for the women in Islam.

Secondly, many reforms have been made in churches where nuns dont even wear scarfs, they just cover their body.

Thirdly, this idea of modesty if they cover their body like a potato sack is just ridiculous. What about wearing clothes that
weren't scandalous and revealing instead of dressing up darth vader.

Wow!  That's actually pretty cool!  Doing all of that in a chador is a bit OTT tho'.  Wouldn't a manteau do just as well and be less cumbersome?
