  • What are Muslim weddings like?

    I think we may have discussed this, but incase it was not, what is a Muslim wedding like? Also, when I mean Muslim wedding, I mean the orthodox wedding, not the one with almost all culture and little Islam in it. I read a website talking about do's and don'ts for Islamic weddings, and as expected, most if it was don'ts. Can you guys tell me what its like and your opinion on it?

    They are mad BORING.

    I have been to a few of these extra halal ones and oh man they drain the life out of you. Its just the Imam reading the contract and once the male from the womans side agrees with it along with the groom its official. The groom must also give a gift if possible.

    I am sure some other people will give a bit more detailed explanation.

    It depends on national culture really. South Asian weddings to have a bit more colour, singing, and in some cases dancing by family and friends of the bride and/or groom. Although both sides tend to have separate functions, but joint ones are not uncommon.

    I have been to a few true Islamic weddings, no music, no beer, lots of quranic recitals, main focus of the event is the food. 

    Men & women are segregated, usually one of the brides family stands bodyguard at the door to make sure no men enter.  My dad once told me to go and get my mum so we could go home, and I almost got into a fight with one of these guys because he wouldnt let me talk to my mum.

    I think weddings are HEAVILY influenced by culture. A common wedding in Yemen continues for like 3-4 days if I am not mistaken, though they are mostly segregated.
    They could involve traditional music and dancing for both genders(on separated days), and also Qat sessions most of the time (It's legal and apparently halal BTW). Not to mention the food, which is fucking delicious.

    Though I haven't been to a very Islamic one myself, from what I heard they're fucking boring. Mostly Islamic nasheeds  and some Qur'an and no fun stuff at all, but Qat sessions are still there.
    The part canex is is talking about is just the marriage contract, it's the same in Yemen as well but it's just one part of the marriage. It can happen even months before the other ceremonies are done, but they're mostly done about the same time.

    According to many strict Muslims, even nasheeds are considered Mukruh, or some say its even haraam. Some nasheeds are nice I will admit, but ONLY in arabic. most nasheeds in english are so tacky and corny, it makes me cringe.

    Speaking of Christian Rock, I know so many Muslims that are going to get married in a few years, so I'm probably gonna go to a couple of weddings and I hope SOME culture is in it. Did you ever go to a strict Islamic wedding before Nour?

    All the singing and dancing and beautiful clothes has nothing to do with Islam.  If Islam had it's way then all of the singing, dancing and beautiful clothes would cease to exist.  We'd have segregation, hijabs and burkas, and no music instead.

    boring and waste of time. You are separated from the women so you just sit there talking to all the guys. Like Islame said, the only attraction is the food.

    So when you sit with the religious guys. What do they talk about? Just Islam and Allah and stuff? I'm just curious sorry if I ask a lot of questions.

    I've been to dozens of muslim weddings with dancing, music, mingling of the sexes, and skimpy clothing. Do most of you live in salafi controlled communities or something?

    The only thing universally missing is really the alchohol and pig meat.

    Well most Muslims I met are either traditional or salafi or leaning towards salafi's. and the masjids I went to were not all culture and liberal.

    Well most Muslims you've met don't represent anywhere near the typical muslim. Truth of the matter is, muslims are not that religious as some here tend to imagine. I've been to a quite a few pakistani, lebanese and of course bengali weddings and pretty much all have had copious amounts of co-ed fun, dancing, music and of course the obligatory token imam who sits there wondering why the fuck he's eating biryani while Akon is blaring in the background. Cheesy

    I went to Salafi ones before and the whole Bangladeshi culture one ( where music, dancing and mingling happens)

    But in terms of true Islamic weddings, those were very segregated and boring. The topic is generally w/e is the mood, like occasional discussion of politics, economy and other stuff. But always it ends up as another 24/7 Praise to be Allah Session.

    I could be biased because lately I have started to feel a complete distaste for Islam, Muslims and anything associated with Islam.

    I don't understand how your distaste for Islam or Muslims will effect your perception of rather simple events.

    I have a huge distate for Islam and the muslim community, but I still can recognize the fact that most muslim weddings I've been to are nowhere near what you described. Perhaps you are unlucky enough to be part of a rather shitty subset of the desi community.

    I have Afghan friends who showed me wedding pictures of an Afghan wedding and they look quite fun! Very Western with the dresscode, non-segregation and music, plus many of the women are hot, atleast the ones I have seen.

    no Southeast Asian cultural weddings are not at all true Islamic wedding style. The true Islamic wedding style is what Infidel described earlier. A whole bunch of nothing with quranic readings and praising Allah

    I was under the impression we were talking about muslim weddings. Islamic weddings.. well I've never been to one and have no clue what that is. Is that like signing of a contract and the deed to the girl is handed over to the groom? LOL

    its pretty much what you make of it.

    I am Bangladeshi American so I have been to Bengali Weddings too. They are more culture based and actually quite fun sometimes. It all comes down to how religious the host party really is

    Yep. Pretty much. Whenever a more liberal muslim family throws a wedding its almost a given that all the hardcore musulman bengali families will never show up. God forbid their obedient daughters gets macked on by some horny bangal punk. Astagfirullah.

    I've been to various pakistani weddings.

    1) Most of the time the girls and men are in segregated areas

    2) After the nikah the bride and groom are moved to the same hall and its then that the men and women are moved in one hall.

    3) Some people have dancing of girls but they're called unislamic by everyone else in the wedding hall (as gossip of course, not to their face).

    4) There are games like the bride's friends asking the groom for money and stuff like that but this is prohibited in more strictly muslim weddings.

    Yeah, the usual game is they steal the bridegrooms shoes, and he has to financially bribe the girls family to get them back.  I came with another pair of shoes, so I let them have them and gave them nowt.

    I've been to several Desi weddings but none of them could be called 'Islamic' although I still found them tremendously boring.  Being stuck with the 'sisters' and their BORING convos about who's gonna marry whom and who's having another baby, blah, blah, blah.  I have found that the food at most of these weddings is pretty sub-standard.  Also, there as not been any dancing at any of the weddings I've attended in the UK, including mine.

    What's even worse is when you've been starving yourself all day in anticipation of all the yummy food you're gonna get only to find that all you get is the leftovers after all the 'brothers' have been through the buffet.  If the host party is considerate enough they will have two buffets, one for the men and one for the women but at some weddings I've been to both in Pakistan and here in England the women have had to wait until the men had got their food first.  That really pissed me off!

    Now I just avoid weddings full stop unless there's gonna be alcohol.

    Thats a shame. Like whenever I see some Christians, Hindu's, even Jewish or Sikh weddings, they can be pretty cool. My friend told me how he went to a Sikh wedding, and many of the people there were really religious, but when it comes wedding time they party like CRAZY! Alcohol, women, lots of dancing, free-mixing and all that fun stuff. But Islamic weddings are just boring, from what you guys are telling me.

    I went to my cousin's Big Fat Jewish wedding in New York a few years ago...  I was pissed every night and my parents had to literally carry me back to the hotel.  I was still married at the time so whilst I was apart from hubbie I let it all hang out!

    My relatives in NYC certainly know how to have a good time.  

    I think the only other wedding I ever enjoyed was a friend who got married in a vinyard... LOTS of wine, plus smoking a doobie with the bride's mother behind the bathrooms.    grin12

    I wanna go to a Jewish wedding I think they look kind of fun too. And a Greek and Italian wedding. Basically any wedding that has large extended families, copious alcohol, and very emotional uncles and cousins, and dancing.
