Do you guys seriously understand the mathematics behind the physics?

I'd be lying if I said I understand the mathematics. Though I did sit through an internet course on it, tried to understand it, but mostly failed - there are about 20 lectures to go through if you're interested:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TcmGYe39XG0

However, you don't really need to understand the maths in depth if you have a working model of what the maths means. it is after all just symbol manipulation, you just need to understand what is being manipulated and why.

The major pioneer, of the theory, Neils Bohr thought the question was out of bounds and was probably something that we could never get round – he felt that was the way nature just is. And yes the copenhagen interpretation was THE major issue when the theory was being pioneered – Bohr and Einstein had endless debates about it – when they both died the issue reamined unresolved and we are to this day pretty meuch none the wiser – although as you point out several suggestions have been made to try and get round the problem. The fact is that the mere act of measurement/observation affects the behaviour of elementary particles – we know this from a series of detailed and elegant set of experiments - and no-one has given an explanation as to why this would be the case and there is certainly no generally accepted way around the problem in the physics community. This however of course bears no impact on the predictive power of the theory - just as a lack of understanding of how gravity actually worked beared little imapct on the predictive power on Newtons Laws of gravity. An understanding of the copenhagen interpretation/quantum measurement problem is in fact a central question toward understanding how the theory actually works. We often hear physicists who work on quantum mechanics say they do not have a deep understanding of the theory - this is mainly because the measurement problem continues to disturb us.

You are right, there is no adequate theory so far to describe the phenomena. One interesting theory that I read about was proposed by Huw Price (a space/time philosopher) and he suggested that the problems of quantum mechanics disappear if you allow backwards causation in time. This of course, opens its own can of worms but from his preliminary sketch seems a very plausible idea.

Black holes do seem to be a problem for physicists though because this is a situation where both classical mechanics and quantum mechanics overlap because it involves incredible gravitational forces and masses compressed into a singularity.

To understand black holes we need a quantum theory of gravity because as you say we are dealing with something very massive yet very small. We therefore in a sense need to combine quantum mechanics with general relativity - this is actually the major hurdle in attaining 'a theory of everything'. This theory, if we ever develop it, will also be good for describing the earliest moments after the big bang because similar conditions also existed then. As I mentioned above string/M-theory and quantum loop gravity are two of our most promisisng theories. They are highly speculative but at the same time involve some exciting new ideas.

Only the easier stuff but most of it goes over my head. I did A-level physics but my mathematical training didn't go much further than that. But don't be put off by not having in depth mathematical knowledge - you do not need it to understand most of the principles. Hawking and Brian Greene do an excellent job in explaining things without the math.

Thanks Abu. I suck at my math but I'm thinking of working hard at it. I hope there will be an intellectual reward for it. Never really liked math.

I did two weeks of A-Level physics, then gave up Tongue Maths is too much for my brain :( I still wanna do physics but I guess I'll stick to reading about it instead.

The one regret (well sort of a regret) I have is that I chose to do Biological Sciences at degree level rather than a physics degree. I think the problem at school is that we only get taught the more boring aspects of physics. Now I sometimes daydream about going back and doing a physics degree and then a research degree in theoretical physics. How sad is that!?

    I'd do a film degree.

Living on my own. It's tough, have to pay rent, and I can't be asked to study and work. But it's OK I work now, go home, read what I want and write what I want. And on that cue I better get some work done.

Wife, kid, mortgage. Imagine if I quit work and went back to study with all these responsibilities! Still I don't regret anything really. I love my wife and I love my son and I actually love my job. Plus I'm probably too dumb to be a theoretical physicist anyway!

I found my physics degree was dull and uninteresting, I wish I had done PPE degree (philosophy, politics & economics) instead.  Problem is that grass is always greener, and we change as we get older.  Although in my case I was pressured into taking sciences as my dad had done that to.

The subject you mentioned reminds me of this one guy (who has since disappeared) who joined last year & had quite an inspirational story (anyone remember his name?).  His had run away from home and in his mid-teenage years was living in some self-catering bedsit and on social  support.  Anyhow he managed to gain admission into Cambridge University to study Theoretical Physics and just started in September ..
