Most Muslims I know strongly disagree with the Mujahideen, as shown in the video. What did you think of them when you were Muslims?

I thought they were heroes. I loved them with all my heart.

I'm part of the same generation that was raised with the Afghan mujahideen fighting soviets. When I was hitting puberty the stories of vids from Chechnya and Bosnia were the talk of all young Muslims we all wanted to go there and fight and help the "brothers". It was a really socially and culturally turbulent time for young western muslim because the late 80s and 90s was the time that gave birth to "generation" jihad, a generation I am part of.. or was before I apostatized.

I remember the muslim guys at our junior high and high school used to get together on computers and watch vids of Chechen mujahideen fighting the Russians. We seriously worshipped guys like Shamil Basayez, I even used have a pic of him pinned on my wall. I took it down later when I realized it was close to shirk.. LOL We all really loved groups like the Hizbullah too, really admired them as lions of Islam. I remember a leb friend of ours used to bring Hizb propaganda vids and we used to watch them *at the mosque*! LOL

The taliban, 9/11, beslan and later terror attacks significantly dented my idealism and slowly dissillusioned me about such things. I think the idealization of those guys is a sort of thing a lot of young muslims out in the UK, Canada and the states used to do. Sort of a phase when you think about it. Some guys become idealistic leftist communist types, others become far right neo-nazis, and other - like us - embraced the mythical hero worship of the mujahideen.

Who are 'most' people? I really have no idea what your generation of muslim kids are like. But pretty much all the young guys of my generation hero worshipped them. I hope your generation is a lot smarter. Because my generation is pretty much where 90% of terrorists originate from.

I also remember we used to do laser tag and paintball matches to 'ready' ourselves for jihad. I'm not joking. We used to wear keffiyehs and black clothing and sometimes even have those shahada flags. We loved doing it in the snow to mimic the chechen figthers hiding out in the mountains and doing ambushes against the russians. It was fun wargaming, we were just kids really.

Tbh, there's still a part of me that still finds the idea of the holy guerilla warrior with nothing but the clothes on his back, a quran in one hand and AK in the other kinda romantic. Its a sort of savage and simplistic ideal that transfixed kids like me at the time.

Lol where did u grow up man? thats pretty rough.

ive lived in pakistan and have many pakistani and arab friends here in canada. almost all are tired and despise these mujahids. i guess being immigrants we can really appreciate the freedom and absence of these stone age minded barbarians.

Well I was raised pretty much in Calgary, Canada.

I think your generation is a lot smarter than ours. I dunno about immigrants appreciating freedom.. I've seen the opposite to be true. We sure as hell didn't appreciate freedom. Thats why most of us found refuge and an identity in the "ummah" and hero worship of the glorious mujahideen.

hmmm. well i have met some crazy ones that do sympathize with the extremist views while living in this country. However ill still say that most muslims view the mujahids negatively. they seem to support them from a political anti american view mostly and would never want them in their communities or live under their rule.

Holy shit you used to be hardcore, more hardcore than I was!

I used to like the Mujahideen, but many Muslims I know hated them. I was like "why do they hate the Mujahideen, these are the people who will be closest to Allah in jannah"

They look like terrorists to me. I hate saying that but its true. I would never say that if I was Muslim.

To be honest, our little clique of pakistanis, bengalis and arabs were not really "hardcore" we were in reality just posers and we were basically roleplaying. It's really no different than dorks dressing up as stormtroopers or lord of the rings characters. Only our heros were Khattab, Basayev, Ahmad Shah Massoud, Sheikh Azzam etc etc.

We really were innocent kids, we didn't have nefarious designs or plans.. maybe the older ones did, and some did eventually go to places like chechnya, bosnia and afghanistan. I know one of our 'bros' was caught in a lashkar toiba training camp and his father got his pakistan army friends to get him out and drag him back to canada. Lucky for him this was before 9/11 so the heat wasn't that bad - but CSIS did question him about his past activites. He's now married and a good momma's boy, behaving very well. Grin

Well at least you aren't in Bosnia or Chechnya fighting right now. Good thing you got out when you had the chance.

We were all upper middle class kids who lived in posh neighbourhoods with doctor or engineer parents. Aside from that one guy, I think most of us outgrew that shit by the time 9/11 rolled around. So there was really never a chance we'd end up KIA in jihad or a suicide plot.

If most people outgrow that whole salafi phase, do you think those people from revolutionmuslim like Yusuf Al Khattab and the others would leave Islam?

Well I was meaning my group of muslim friends specifically. I think when you're that extreme you eventually reach a point where you burn out. The people who stay commited to that shit are usually very very commited and stubborn people, they are either very dumb or very smart. Mostly dumb, but its the smart ones that eventually do 9/11. Dumb ones get caught openly buying fertilizer from CSIS agents.

I just don't understand why smart and bright muslims would want to join that salafi shit, going into that nonsense.

Did you ever meet any people who really got into that whole Salafi phase and got out?

Yep, there were a few who were really hardcore.. that changed and moderated or just disappeared. Maybe apostated? I hope. lol

But I just want to point out: Salaf =/= Jihad enthusiasts. Most of the people fitting terrorist profiles and are keen to engage in violence or terrorism - or interested in mujahideen are NOT salafis. Salafis are more interested in religious purity than politics, the jihad-lover types can often be very loose muslims who just love the tribal warrior shit.

Before 9/11 and a few years after it, people were like "Jihad is teh shit" and admired all the Mujahids, they were even happy when 9/11 happened. Despite that, most people don't really see themselves being there in Jihad, just wishing they had the courage to do it, or saying they would do it but calling the government scum for not allowing Jihad in Palestine and Iraq (I think they wouldn't go either way).

After they have realized that the west became skeptical of Muslims and paid attention to them, and after the "Jihad" which happened between Muslims themselves (Sunni-Shia conflicts), people started realizing that it isn't really a good idea to support such acts, and started being not so supportive of the idea of Jihad.

As for me personally, I kinda went with the masses. And 2-3 years before my apostasy I started to really hate them and convinced myself that this is not what Islam preaches, and that Jihad was self-defense blah blah.
