But I guess it depends what this site is for. To me this site has two key purposes:
1) To criticise Islamic dogma in a reasonable, honest way, without the bigotry and xenophobia of Muslims.
2) To give young apostates a place to hang out and feel a sense of belonging.

Perhaps it has decreased in function 1 and increased in function 2.

The fact that many apostates do not stay on this forum for too long is kindof inevitable. Many apostates will want to get on with their lives after getting their story/thoughts/ideas/anger off their chest. I certainly feel I have got a lot off my chest (i.e. my story, ideas, theories, etc), and feel much better now.

Bang on there, A T . I think your pt 2 is it's most important function - I still remember how important it was to me 50 years ago to have a kindred soul to confide in until I'd really come to terms with it myself.
Your point 1 comes later perhaps, when some apostates come to realise that they've something to offer others who want to make the same transition.

I think your points 1 and 2 are both linked. I remember, the reason I joined this forum is because in real life, I could not say what I actually thought about Islam, so I wanted to be able to speak to like minded people about Islam.

In many ways I sort of heralded the coming of stupidity to CEMB. I don't recall any notable stupid people when I first joined. Everybody was generally serious and well behaved.

Me too. I'm still relatively serious but you and BD had a profound effect on the whole vibe of this forum and I mean that in good way.

I initially joined because I needed to get it off my chest after suffering a sense of alienation. Now like SJ said, I am here to have fun, learn and provide help in whichever way I can.

I think there has always been a good vibe on this forum, ever since I joined. It will always adapt & change as it will take on the character of the contributory posters of the time, and this fluidity & dynamism is what makes it interesting, for me at least.

As long as we maintain a rich & diverse range of character and dont alienate any group by turning into an all boys club, then I'm happy with whatever direction it takes - after all it will reflect what the members want.

I should add that another way in which this forum has helped me greatly is to find the right balance in terms of bashing Islam. It's easy for new apostates to get taken in by the hate-mongering, xenophobic anti-Muslims (many of them Christians or Jews trying to promote their religion).
We must criticise and bash Islam but we must remember that Muslims are just people, who are to be rescued from this collective insanity -- for their sake as well as ours.
