My advice on dealing with the guilt is to remind yourself of what your kids will have to go through if you stay at home. And what effect it will have on you. Even though both our parents just want what's right for us, it doesn't mean they know what's right for us and it certainly doesn't give them the right to force it on us.

     yes

As much has you may love your parents, you have to live your own life. It's all yours, to do well in, or screw up. You have to decide whether you are going to live your life for them, or for yourself.

Your parents will have to learn to live with it. And if they refuse to, there is nothing you can do. And if they are hurt by your choices, it's their own fault. Not yours.

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I remain.

I don't think the officials in her country will issue a certificate unless he convinces them or provides evidence that he has converted.

Yeah I figured I'd ask, but I am not sure it's possible in the country she's in. If it is possible for your bf to "convert" just for the purposes of getting married, I'd advise you both to take that step and do it so you can escape the inevitable future you will probably face if you can not leave.

Yeah. A tactical conversion can be the best strategy in some scenarios.

    Hahaha.

It's not even that simple. Algeria might well be the worst country for foreigners to marry in. Example: My cousin married a Turk, last year. He is muslim, and has been living in the country for five years. Well, it took them two years to be able to get a marriage license. He was made to say the shahada before witness all over again, even though he was born muslim, and they could just never get a clear answer as to when they would get the ok to marry. It was hell. I don't even want to imagine what it would be like for someone who doesn't have a residence permit here and who wasn't born muslim.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I'll research all possibilities Smiley

    Amazing story.

I hope you have found yourself knowing what you really want in life and I hope you can somehow start a life with your Scandinavian boyfriend.

Knowing the algerian culture and traditions I am sure it wont be easy but I am crossing my fingers for you!

Looks like you are concerned about the happiness of your parents but they aren’t concerned about your happiness and what is best for you at all.
Remember that your parents are free to make their own choices and so are you.
You are not a bad person for following your heart, quite the opposite.
Your parents should be happy that you are happy - its not you who is forcing anything on them; the opposite is true. And they should be mature enough to realize that. Fuck the cultural expectations – it’s your life and your happiness at stake here.

Just out of curiosity: are those drive-thru Vegas wedding valid anywhere out of Nevada?

They are valid anywhere in the US.  All other states recognize Nevada's marriage licence, as long as the procedures are followed.
