Do You Want To Destroy Islam?
OP - March 31, 2010, 07:17 PM

I am interested in the views of Ex-Muslims.

My vote is option 3.

I am not against Islam as a whole - but I am against certain doctrines, beliefs and interpretations.

I have no problem with peaceful and moderate interpretations of Islam.

If ppl want to believe in bullshit - I don't care - so long as their beliefs are peaceful.

I don't want to destroy anything.

I want to be part of a more secular/rational world where fundamental human rights and science are the guiding values of humanity. If Muslims societies can progress to accept these notions then Islam is no longer an issue for me.

I, like you Hassan, have no problem with liberal interpretations of Islam and its texts. It's best to just take away the political aspect of Islam but always promote freethinking and critical analysis.

Of course I think Islam is complete bullshit - but so long as their interpretation is peaceful why should I want to get rid of them? Or any other stupid belief? It seems rather fanatical to me.

Since the creation of Religion especially the 3 big ones, it has given us tons of problems. Religion helps justify wars that never should begin in the first place

While I agree we would be better off without religion - I think that making it my mission to destroy them will not help.

Instead I would rather share my views with those who want to listen and live peacefully with those who don't.

Religion will never be destroyed. Period. Anyone trying to do such a thing is either full of hate or very deluded. The best we can hope for is that relgion becomes socially/politically irrelevant and purely a personal matter.

Exactly, also I think people themselves should develop the intellectual honesty and use their own logic to leave religion, me trying to force them to is pointless and not helpful.

I just think if it somehow was destroyed and didnt exist anymore, in many ways the world will be a better place

Yep, people started to become more rationalized free thinkers, and stayed away from mythological bs, then slowly religion will destroy itself and end

I totally understand where you are coming from - but saying one wants to to "Destroy" religion is both unrealistic and counter-productive.

I prefer subtle persuasion - and hope humanity grows up - if not I can live with that - so long as they are peaceful.

I would vote somewhere between 1 and 2. Of all the major religions Islam is without doubt the biggest liability and threat to mankind.

I'd prefer to use another word than "destroy" but if we insist on using that word then like liberated said I'd want it destroyed through education and liberation. Basically, I want to see large scale apostasy.

If you accept islam then you have to accept islam in its entirety but If you say you would skip the bad parts then it means you are aiming for reformation of islam. Now who will decide what is to be kept and what is to be not? When people for centuries couldnt agree what is to be followed I dont think people can agree on what shouldnt be followed.

Secondly we all know following islam makes some people commit crimes.Why take the risk in that case by keeping it? Suppose that you know that you have a car and there is a chance that the brakes may fail and you may meet with an accident . Would you take the risk of going with it? Any sane person wouldnt take the risk because of the probability of meeting with an accident then why take risk by keeping islam when it has a history of producing criminals?

If islam is destroyed then atleast those who have never been exposed to islam would be saved from becoming potential criminals.

My view too. Many people need something, especially those who've not had a secular, rationalised education or can't be educated. The key is providing everyone with an accessible body of understanding that is not based on the supernatural.

My view on this is that none of it should be considered obligatory to follow. We need to recognize that Islam is a mythology as has been recognized for so many other religions. If that can become widely accepted then people are free to take whatever they like from the tradition. I think we will get there and I think the religious Muslims left at the time will cite the ahadith saying how people will return to paganism etc. lol. However, the surprise ending is not Jesus returning to defeat the Dajjal, it is the continued dissolution of 'Islam the religion'. This will take a considerable amount of time. Modernity is expected to have been fully absorbed into the Muslim world by 2200 - that's 190 years away. We won't live to see the great change that Islam will undergo but we can be catalysts for it and very importantly, we can make a difference in individual lives today.

I can't vote because I am not an ex-Muslim. If I were to vote, I would prefer the 1st option sans the word "alone". I would like to ask a few questions to all of you:

1. Many Muslims have killed people accused of adultery by stoning. Is it because they love the method, or is it because of Islam?
2. Sometimes in some places, the hands of thieves are cut off as punishment. Is it because Muslims love cutting the hands of other humans, or is it because of Islam?
3. In some Islamic countries' laws, the punishment for blasphemy and/or apostasy is death. Is it because of Islam or is it a cultural thing?

In my opinion, Islam IS a virus which infects people who otherwise would have been perfectly loving and normal human beings.

That is exactly what I mean by "destruction" of Islam. I don't mean all the copies of Quran/Ahadith confiscated and burned, all the mosques razed to the ground, and anyone claiming himself as being a Muslim incarcerated.
