    It isn't 'exploit' if there is consent. At least most of the time.

    Actually you know what Infidel? That's the exact way I see it. But I recently met a Feminist (the hardcore, in your face type) who asked me that very question. I of course said no, and she pretty much lashed out on me.  Roll Eyes

    I don't think it is a black and white issue but then again on the whole I don't think it is intended to or does. Most these women are willing performers who enjoy their work. I'm not saying there aren't situations in which some porn producers and strip club owners exploit a woman's financial circumstances for their own gain. I remember in fact one Muslim pornstar saying she felt empowered by performing on camera, Sarah Knite, I think it was. I don't think it does exploit women.

    Hard to be exploitation if they chose to do it.

    Well most jobs there don't exactly require a woman to earn a living based on her sexual organs...

    I don't think porn recruiting counts as exploitation of women, but then again, if someone was passionate enough, I could see a good argument being made against them.

    But they don't have to do that job.  If there was some kind of force, then it absolutely would be 'exploitation'.  As such those women can be Micky D cashiers, work at the Gap, work for the telephone company, be secretaries, bartenders, hand out fliers, do manual labor, join the military, etc.  If they feel like they are being exploited then they can simply leave their job and pick up another.  

    Did the distribution company I worked for require me to make my living by picking up heavy objects? Yes, but I wasn't being exploited.  I could have simply found another job that didn't require such things. When you apply it to other things it sounds ludicrous.  Is an it company exploiting their workers by forcing them to sit at a computer and write code?  Well if you go to Google, I don't think you will see what you would call 'exploitation' going.  

    This isn't directed at you Tommy, just the argument.

    Well it isn't so good right now, but I don't think the people who have a job are feeling exploited compared to those who don't have a job.  The option to transition from one job to another is still there.  What I am saying is , given the assumption of free choice, that the porn star joins voluntarily and the company employs them voluntarily, that the workers aren't being exploited because they could chose to do other jobs in other professions if those professions were more "profitable" for them to go into.  

    We could say that employees are being "exploited" as a whole right now because the job market has become a buyer's market instead of a seller's market.

    I just think that when most people say pornography, strippers ect are exploitative they aren't making an economic argument, they are, in reality, making a gender roles argument.  They aren't saying women aren't getting paid fairly or working conditions are deplorable, they are saying, " I don't think women should be doing this because of my conception of what women should be"
    So once again I'm left with the classic Irish man's dilemma, do I eat the potato or do I let it ferment so I can drink it later?

    And this is the reason why that woman pissed me off. She tried to guilt trip me and instantly threw the word "sexist" at me when I disagreed with her. I don't know why, but she linked recruiting women for porn being the same thing as picking up women like pick up artists do? I told her to fuck off, but I must admit, that arguement really gave me a good laugh after wards.

    Before I left this forum for few months, I believe it was Q-Man that posted a very hillarious voice mail left by a Pick Up artist called "DimitriTheLover." I must admit I laughed at what he believed is attraction, but it was disappointing to read the comments of people in that thread just ridiculing every Men who give dating advice to other Men weather it's through books, or seminars or just internet forums. With every form of art, there are going to be a good approach, and a bad approach--in the context of picking up women, that translates to a humanistic approach, and a sly/unethical approach. No doubt "DimitriTheLover" is the sly and manipulative type, but clumping everyone into one category based on one poor example displayed by an insecure man and a biased (and I'd argue Sexist) thesis written by Elan Clift, is not exactly being fair.

    As much as I appreciate and support the woman's movement, I also support the recent Man's movement as well (more so actually). Striking a balance is always the best thing over picking one over the other--frankly that's what the thread was lacking, for which I didn't bother to reply. This whole encounter with that lady and her silly comment really reminded of Q's thread instantly.

    How does pornography exploit only women? What about men? Seems like a double-standard when men and women are both in the industry but somehow women are delicate and need standing up for with an "omg she's being exploited!", I think they're big girls and old enough to make decisions about what they want to do with themselves; and they're no different to men in that way. You wouldn't see as many people saying men are victims of exploitation from porn.

    Female porn stars are paid much more than their male counterparts. And the men have to deal with a lot of pressure to 'keep it up' all the time for as long as the scene lasts.

    There may be exploitation, it isn't uncommon to hear complaints about that in the public from time to time. I think the real issue is whether it is degrading or not? It certainly is degrading. If people freely choose to degrade themselves that is fine, we just have to watch for abuses, such as you mentioned (exploitation).

    "Degrading" is a word that implies a moral judgement. It might be degrading to you but to some it might even be empowering. Also it's extremely patronising to a priori assume that somebody is degrading themselves.

    Have you ever heard of Danni Ashe - a successful businesswoman and a pornstar. Or even Ovidie - she is a radical feminist and a pornstar. Read her "Porno Manifesto" before you make moral judgements like you just did.
